Executive summary

2008 is a solid year for hot drinks in Costa Rica

Hot drinks performed well in 2008, with a total volume growth rate that was higher than the CAGR for the review period. Although there were fewer young consumers drinking coffee, there is a new culture of leaving home and drinking lattes and green tea with friends in a café. This has helped to grow the coffee sector as well as the tea sector.

Shift in consumption habits impacts market

The younger generation is proving to be different from their parents and grandparents, as they are starting to consume coffee at an older age. This lack of tradition is partly due to the plethora of substitute products presently available, like carbonates, RTD tea and energy drinks, giving coffee a lot of competition. Perhaps the new trend of sipping a café au lait frio at a trendy coffee shop will change this around as coffee companies attempt to increase coffee consumption.

Local brands are a force to be reckoned with

Local companies lead both the coffee and tea sectors in Costa Rica as they benefit from a long history in the country and unparalleled consumer awareness. As Costa Rica has long been a big coffee producer, the sector has remained closed to outside brands, giving local brands, such as Café Rey, Café 1820 and Café Volio, a major advantage. In recent years, the sector has opened up with the introduction of the Juan Valdez brand from Columbia, but consumers showed that they truly were loyal to their local brew. In the tea sector, local companies Manza Té SA and Para Mondaisa SA have long dominated the sector as they offer a wide variety of products at competitive prices. Many imported brands are gaining presence, however, as they have innovative and unique product offerings.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets dominates hot drinks volume sales

Supermarkets/hypermarkets dominates hot drinks volume sales as this distribution channel offers convenience and unmatched product variety compared to other channels. Consumers are increasingly going to supermarkets/hypermarkets for all their shopping needs, thus making it the ideal spot to buy their hot drinks products and other necessary items, thus taking away share from the traditional pulperías (independent small grocers).

Strong growth expected for hot drinks

There is a positive future ahead for hot drinks as total volume growth in the forecast period is expected to exceed that seen during the review period. Tea is expected to perform well due to health reasons as well as the projected increase of cafés countrywide, where consumers will also go to sip a cup of coffee.
