Executive summary

Other hot drinks fastest growing sector of hot drinks market

Inflation has been a factor in overall value growth of all hot drinks, coming close to double digits in 2008. Volume growth, in turn, was in the low single digits for all hot drinks sectors in 2008. Other hot drinks volume growth was stronger than that of both coffee and tea and is probably the most competitive of the three sectors in the Dominican Republic, with impulse purchases boosted primarily by advertising and other forms of marketing.

Private label products threatening all traditional hot drinks producers

The largest and most important retail channel in the Dominican Republic is supermarkets, most of which are parts of large chains which represent or own large private label lines. Private label products have many advantages over independently manufactured products, especially those which are produced domestically as many consumers consider these to be of higher quality since they are imported. Product categories such as instant coffee, packaged tea and chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks are the most likely in which consumers will substitute branded for private label products.

Coffee and other hot drinks highly competitive while tea comprises of niches

While coffee and other hot drinks have many manufacturers competing for the same consumers, the tea sector can be split into very small niches, which generally have one or very few competitors. The coffee sector, especially instant coffee, has many competitors as well as private label products which all compete for the same customers, and the large fresh coffee category has one very large domestic manufacturer in Industrias Banilejas CxA and many smaller manufacturers which aim to gain share at the large manufacturer’s expense. Other hot drinks all compete against each other and against the influx of private label products most chained supermarkets and hypermarkets offer. The tea sector is divided into tea categories offering different benefits, such as green tea for its health properties, camomile for calming, fruit infusions for their digestive properties and other varieties which generally do not compete against each other. There is practically no marketing effort on the part of tea manufacturers.

Supermarkets define the hot drinks market in the Dominican Republic

Supermarkets, particularly those that are part of a chain, continue to gain in importance in spite of already being the most important retail outlets for hot drinks in the Dominican Republic. Supermarkets define which brands are available for the entire market since no product in the hot drinks category can afford not to be distributed via supermarkets because all other retail outlets are very spread out and are much harder to deal with unless they see a need for a particular product. In other words, where a supermarket can afford to stock various brands of one type of product, other retailers will usually limit their stock to the one or two leading brands they are sure customers will request.

Speciality coffee shops expected to maintain hot drinks growth

The market for hot drinks in the Dominican Republic is expected to sustain its current growth rate over the forecast period in total volume terms, with on-trade volume growth set to post a higher growth rate than off-trade as a result of the growing trend for speciality coffee shops, which are expected to become increasingly popular as they broaden their consumer base by spreading to less upmarket locations. Other hot drinks, which is a very competitive sector, is expected to see strong growth thanks to consistent investment in marketing.
