Executive summary

Hot drinks sector growth in 2008 driven by the entrance of new brands

The hot drinks sector continued to grow in Ecuador in 2008. Several new brands were launched into the market, forcing market leaders like Nestlé de Ecuador SA to reinforce their marketing campaigns and to implement new strategies with regard to distribution channels, such as placing vending machines in key locations. Another factor that has impacted the industry is the increase in the number of specialty coffee shops across the country. This is an attractive market that has not been fully exploited and that is still developing.

Ecuadorian coffee industry gathers strength nationally and in international markets

The coffee industry in Ecuador has increased in importance in the local market. Since 2002, several domestic brands developed gourmet coffee that is exported to different countries in Europe and Latin and North America. For instance, Escoffee Coffee Company produces five tonnes of raw beans per month, of which 96% is exported. These domestic brands have also had an impact on the local market, with consumers starting to look at other options besides instant coffee. To take advantage of this trend, several coffee shops started operations since 2003 in the main cities of the country, offering good quality coffee at reasonable prices.

Juan Valdez enters the Ecuadorian market

The well-recognised Colombian coffee shop chain Juan Valdez , which has several franchises in many countries in Latin America, announced its intention to enter the Ecuadorian market with a number of new outlets to be opened by 2009, with an investment of US$2.8 million. The entry of Juan Valdez will increase competition for the coffee chain Sweet & Coffee, which has 23 outlets (17 in Guayaquil and six in Quito). Rising competition among specialty coffee shops is expected to further increase the interest in premium fresh coffee among Ecuadorians and presents opportunities for such products in the off-trade.

New hot drinks distribution channels

With the objective of raising consumption of hot drinks in the local market, leading companies like Nestlé de Ecuador SA and El Café CA have started to distribute their products through new channels such as drugstores and food courts in shopping malls, and through their own outlets located in strategic places such as universities and malls. Additionally, Nestlé made minor investments in vending machines in Ecuador. These investments should allow hot drinks companies to better target younger consumers such as students.

Hot drinks will continue to grow through the forecast period

It is expected that hot drinks will continue to record a positive performance over the 2008-2013 period. With rising incomes and relatively low per capita consumption of coffee and other hot drinks, there is room for consumption to increase. It is expected that companies will increasingly target this market and aim to spur growth by launching new products. Although much smaller compared to coffee, tea will also see fairly strong growth. However, the market for packaged herbal teas based on popular herbs will continue to be constrained by the presence of fresh herb alternatives.
