Executive summary
Mature coffee sector spurred by sizzling café culture
A vibrant café culture in Finland boosted sales within the increasingly mature coffee sector in 2006. While the sector is characterised by maturity and saturation, with one of the world’s highest per capita rates of coffee consumption, on-trade volume sales are growing steadily. Continental drinking and dining habits have encouraged Finns to visit cafés more often, drinking lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and espressos in ever-greater quantities.
Health and café trend boosts demand for tea
Café owners in Finland agree that tea – especially green and fruit/herbal teas – are increasingly in demand. Green tea continued to see strong growth rates in the on- and off-trade channels in 2006. It is becoming very popular due to health reasons and its good taste. New launches and a low sales base have provided a favourable climate for growing sales. Tea drinking has become more popular with the younger generation than it has with the established coffee drinking generation of over 40-year-olds.
Finns discovering “netcup” and “syrups”
Finland’s answer to Starbucks in continental Europe is Robert’s Coffee AB. Coffee with added syrups is a fairly new but increasingly popular concept in Finland and has seen steady sales growth in Robert’s Coffee. Robert’s Coffee AB offers convenient takeaway servings, but also encourages in-house consumption. The chain works closely with mobile phone manufacturer Nokia, offering “Netcup service” in most of its cafés. Netcup is a concept allowing café visitors to use the latest "thinking pads" and internet systems, when buying a beverage.
Domestic Gustav Paulig AB Oy is the clear leader in hot drinks
Domestic player Gustav Paulig AB – a leading coffee manufacturer – leads the Finnish hot drinks market. The market is skewed towards coffee manufacturers given coffee’s dominant position in the market. Indeed, Finland is one of the greatest coffee-consuming countries in the world, with a high rate of per capita consumption. Within tea, Suomen Unilever Oy and R Twining & Co Ltd ranked in the lead in 2006, despite holding relatively small value shares of hot drinks.
Stable forecast growth boosted by healthy on-trade demand
Hot drinks will experience a stable development, growing marginally in volume terms over the forecast period. Anticipated healthy development of on-trade volume sales – primarily coffee – is a central factor behind the positive forecast.
Predicted increases in coffee prices in the world market as well as a healthy demand for premium products will result in constant value sales seeing slightly stronger growth than volume sales. As a result, average unit prices will grow slowly over the forecast period, although continued competition from private label products will prevent stronger growth rates.
