Executive summary

Consumption of coffee reaches new heights

Consistent growth in sales of coffee – both fresh and instant – over the review period saw per capita consumption reach 1kg by 2005. This is expected to increase yearly, with increasing interest also being shown in other hot drinks. Price pressure is an important issue, which needs to be considered, as low price and poor quality imported coffee threatens to flood the market.

Local tea manufacturing in deep crisis

Only a decade or two ago, Georgia supplied the whole of the former Soviet Union and beyond with tea. With the disintegration of the USSR and breakdowns in economic relations, old commodity markets were lost, and new ones have not been found. As a result, the manufacturing of Georgian tea fell over the review period and the extensive expansion of inexpensive imported teas occurred. During the review period, foreign manufacturers dominated retail value sales of tea in Georgia. On the other hand, there are short-and-long-term opportunities for domestic tea manufacturers to market tea both in Georgia and for export.

Revival of traditional tea and coffee houses

During Soviet times and before, specialist tea and coffee houses were very popular in Georgia. This tradition ended with the economic crisis of the 1990s – but they are now in a state of revival. A distinctive feature of the final two years of the review period was the re-emergence of the numerous specialist tea and coffee cafés, called Houses of Tea and Coffee. They offer a wide choice of tea and coffee to customers. This includes traditional, black standard tea, a wide choice of green tea, fruit/herbal tea in a variety of flavours, and fresh and instant coffee. These businesses have rapidly become more and more popular, and are expected to expand throughout Georgia as private businesses and networks.

Other hot drinks shows the fastest development in 2005

Other hot drinks was the most dynamic performer in terms of retail volume and current value sales growth in 2005 and over the review period as a whole. Growth was mainly driven by chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks, which dominated the sector. Although the sector saw the highest growth in 2005 this was largely due to its small size in comparison to tea and coffee. Other hot drinks is therefore less mature and has more room to develop in the Georgian market, particularly with new product introductions during the review period.
