Executive summary

Back on track

Following the devastating effects of the 2002 coffee crisis, which drove down coffee prices, coffee producers in Guatemala are recovering well. Overall, hot drinks posted reasonable growth for the second consecutive year in 2005, and it is expected to continue to perform well during the forecast period.

Increased investments in coffee were pivotal in boosting overall production and raising product quality between 2003 and 2005. Coffee plantations relocated to higher altitudes, producing a much stronger aroma and taste, and started focusing on high value products like organic coffee. In 2005, coffee production was hampered by natural disasters.

Anacafé promotes domestic products

Recent actions taken by trade associations such as the National Coffee Association, Anacafé, have been crucial in driving domestic sales. With the help of hot drinks manufacturers and retailers, the National Coffee Association has managed to encourage Guatemalan consumers to buy domestic coffee. In 2003 national campaigns were launched, boosting overall consumption by creating a “coffee culture” among Guatemalan consumers and enhancing the quality of domestic products.

Café Rey loses share to local manufacturers

Café Rey continued leading coffee sales in Guatemala in 2005. Nevertheless, it consistently lost volume and value share over the review period. The positive performance of other local manufacturers was prompted by increased governmental actions to promote the consumption of national coffee throughout the country.

Foodservice sales growing

Despite the perceived lack of a “coffee culture”, the overall performance of foodservice establishments in Guatemala proved the opposite over the review period. In addition to inviting consumers to try new hot drinks, the strong performance achieved by the on-trade channel was key in stimulating the consumption of gourmet coffee throughout the country.

Healthier products ahead

Strong demand for healthier products is expected over the forecast period as consumers become increasingly health conscious. In general, it is likely to drive tea sales. Hence, industry analysts expect greater dynamism within tea, particularly in terms of new product development. Although coffee and other hot drinks manufacturers do not have many options, they should still benefit from this trend by launching decaffeinated varieties or light/diet varieties with added vitamins.
