Tradition influences hot drinks
Hot drinks such as tea and to a lesser extent coffee are very popular in Kazakhstan due to the country’s climate and customs. Traditionally, black tea is one of the most popular drinks in the country, accounting for a 67% value-share of hot drinks. There was increasing interest in hot drink products with a healthy aspect in 2008. This drove sales of higher priced brands of green tea.
Growing demand for black tea bags and fresh ground coffee
A coffee culture has been developing in Kazakhstan and coffee continued to witness high growth for fresh coffee, especially the ground varieties. It benefited from its popularity as a more natural drink than instant coffee. Tea bags black standard were the most dynamic category in tea and it benefited from being convenient to use and the growing consumption of tea in horeca.

The leading companies were working in the segment for many years and already have a well-established relationship with their target audience and have earned the loyalty of their customers.
Retail Landscape changing
Both tea and coffee have seen a shift in the channels through which consumers make their purchases, with a significant rise in the volume shares held by supermarkets/hypermarkets. Convenience stores also demonstrated a slight increase in volume share, as urban consumers with growing incomes were prepared to pay more for convenience. Independent small grocers was the main channel in rural areas.
Forecast performance is influenced by changing lifestyle trends
