Executive summary

Continued improvement in 2005

Volume sales of hot drinks in Lithuania rose at a healthy rate during the review period, although value sales could have seen stronger growth. The falling cost of green coffee coupled with increasing competition from multinationals kept value growth lower than expected. Overall, in 2005, there was continuous strong demand for other hot drinks, ongoing growth in sales of coffee, combined with a small decline in tea volume sales, that resulted in sustainable volume and value growth of the sector overall.

Diversity drives coffee and tea’s performances

In terms of trends within coffee, the continuing success of instant coffee mixes was the most notable trend in 2005. These products are appearing in bigger packaging sizes as well as in new flavours, developments which are further boosting their popularity.

Within tea, the most notable trend in 2005 was the continuing success of more exotic options, such as flavoured green and black tea, and the popularity of more exotic flavour combinations within the fast growing fruit/herbal tea subsector.

Multinationals rule the market

The hot drinks industry remains highly concentrated. Tea was led by international companies like MFJ Group, Unilever Baltic LLC SIA and Presto Prekyba UAB throughout the review period. In coffee, the domestic company Vilniaus Pergale AB maintained its market position although international companies strengthened their shares and challenged domestic players. Other hot drinks remained under the control of Saldva UAB and Krüger GmbH & Co KG.
