Executive summary

Healthy hot drinks growth in 2008

Hot drinks recorded healthy growth of 5% in both total volume and retail value terms in 2008. Slovakians continue to become increasingly interested in hot drinks due to rising purchasing power and higher living standards. Hot drinks have become a more common part of everyday life both off-trade and on-trade. However, it should be noted that despite rising incomes, the majority of Slovakian consumers remain highly price sensitive.

Increasing demand for higher quality and healthier products

There was a significant increase in demand for higher quality and healthier hot drinks products during 2008. Slovakians are increasingly prepared to spend more on quality and added-value products, especially within coffee and tea where several new premium brands were launched recently.

Strong competition between domestic and multinational producers

The Slovakian hot drinks segment is characterized by significant competition between domestic and multinational producers. Tchibo Slovensko led sales in 2008 and has benefited greatly from the increasing popularity of coffee consumption among Slovakian consumers. Domestic producer Baliarne Obchodu ranked second in 2008 and is particularly strong within coffee and tea. Multinationals Nestlé and Jacobs Suchard ranked third and fourth respectively and both companies are active within a wide range of hot drinks categories.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets gain volume share

Supermarkets/hypermarkets experienced an increase in distribution volume share in 2008 and account for the majority of hot drinks sales in Slovakia. Supermarkets/hypermarkets have benefited from the tendency of Slovakian consumers to look for the cheapest prices and from the fact that the increasingly hectic pace of modern life means that consumers are looking for the most convenient shopping outlets.

Future outlook for hot drinks

Hot drinks has respective projected forecast period retail value and total volume CAGRs of 1% and 3%. Sales will be fuelled by Slovakia’s booming economy which is expected to be one of the best performing in the European Union over the next five years. Despite the current global financial crisis, Slovakian disposable incomes are expected to continue to increase throughout the forecast period. However, value growth will be significantly slower than volume growth due to increasing price competition between companies.
