Executive summary
Health shapes sales
A growing awareness of health and wellness issues among Spaniards was bolstered by a growing preoccupation with body image and physical appearance during the review period. This is having a growing impact on product innovation and the performance of hot drinks in Spain. This was why sales of coffee continued to fall. Some consumers switched to tea, which has a healthier image. This also resulted in the continuing fortification of products aimed at children such as chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks.
Not cold enough
There is consensus among trade experts that the last three years during the review period saw summer temperatures that were higher than usual. This is related to climate change and is expected to worsen over the forecast period. Hot drinks are mainly consumed in colder months, while autumn and winter are shortening each year. This is constraining sales of hot drinks and will continue to do so during the forecast period.
High prices hinder sales
Spain is not a coffee-producing country. This results in internal prices of coffee being highly dependant on international ones. Poor harvests, along with the effects of the 2004 tsunami, resulted in growing unit prices. Hence, coffee consumption stagnated.
Nestlé leads sales
There is strong concentration in Spanish hot drinks, with the top four companies dominating. Nestlé continues to lead sales of hot drinks. The company has been present in Spain for over 100 years and enjoys a high recognition and popularity among Spaniards.
Age presents a challenge to future growth
The Spanish population continues to age. According to official figures, Spain will be the oldest country in the world by 2050, along with Japan. This is likely to mean that growth in consumption of regular coffee in the longer term is likely to be sluggish at best. On a more positive note, the consumption of decaffeinated coffee may see a slight increase, as this is perceived as healthier. This trend is also shifting consumption from coffee to herbal tea, particularly through the on-trade as consumers look to healthier alternatives for consumption on-the-go.
