Executive summary

Health and wellness dictate purchasing decisions

Growth in the Spanish hot drinks market was driven by the off-trade and the launch of new products in 2008. Moreover, growing awareness of health and wellness among the Spanish population was bolstered by an increasing preoccupation with fitness and physical appearance over the last few years, which had a growing influence on the purchasing of hot drinks. Some consumers are switching from coffee to tea, which offers greater health benefits. Furthermore, sales of decaffeinated coffee and green and fruit/herbal tea grew strongly, while torrefacto coffee – coffee beans roasted with sugar- witnessed a significant volume decline in 2008.

Chained coffee shops expand in Spain

Cafés and bars have had a constant presence in Spain for generations. Chained coffee shops, either national or from abroad, have to face the fact that the majority of consumers still prefer their local bar for a coffee, and that the concept of espresso-based coffee is anything but new to the Spanish. In this context, chained coffee shops decided to expand their model across Spain through an increasing number of outlets and the introduction of innovative product offerings.

Concentration characterises Spanish hot drinks market

The hot drinks market is concentrated in the hands of major players. Nestlé España SA, Sara Lee Southern Europe SL, Nutrexpa SA and Kraft Foods Iberia SL accounted for more than a 60% value share of hot drinks sales in Spain in 2008. Moreover, private label also maintained a significant share. In response, during the last few years, many domestic players - mainly in the on-trade - have developed strategies to reinforce their brand’s position as synonymous with quality.

Off-trade distribution drives hot drinks sales

Off-trade distribution continued to be the key driver of hot drinks volume sales. In general, off-trade distribution channels benefit from a wide range of hot drinks products, mainly in terms of new launches and promotional campaigns. However, the only exception has been coffee consumption, which has always been very high outside the home, surpassing that of the off-trade channel over the review period and being one of the highest rates in the world.

Slight decline in hot drinks over the forecast period

Over the forecast period hot drinks is expected to stagnate or even slightly decline in constant value terms. The market will be characterised by a search for healthier solutions, growth of the fairtrade concept and the launch of premium products.
