Executive summary

The events in the coffee sector played the main role in 2008 for hot drinks

In 2008, coffee remained one of the main sectors within the hot drinks industry, with a significant volume and value sales share. This sector, however, has been one of the most affected in terms of shortages and price regulation, suggesting that its volume and value could have been even greater. Coffee will continue to remain a very important product in the regular diet of Venezuelans, and that is the reason why it is part of the plans that the government has to encourage its production, and possibly maintain its regulation in terms of price and presentation in the long run.

Changes in price regulation relieve tension in the coffee sector

One of the most important events with regard to hot drinks in 2008 was the revision and modification of regulated prices, which had been frozen since 2005. The state changed the prices, taking into account the increasing effect of the distortions in the coffee industry, due to costs that had become too high to maintain profitability on sales. However, some representatives from the private sector claim not to be entirely satisfied with this modification as it did not meet their expectations.

New players are beginning to appear in the competitive landscape

The leadership in different hot drinks sectors is still in the hands of companies that dominated the market in 2007. In the case of coffee, Marcelo y Rivero CA retained its leading position, in the tea sector Alfonzo Rivas & Cía CA maintained the advantageous position afforded it by its McCormick brand, and in the other hot drinks sector Empresas Polar CA leads with its brands Quaker and Toddy, the latter newly enhanced with a modern image change. However, new competitors began to gain ground in various areas, including companies like Zuly Milk, which participates in chocolate-based powder hot drinks. Also, New Colony, the decaffeinated coffee brand from the Colombian company Casa Luker, increased its visibility during the traditional coffee shortages.

Hot drinks sales expand through several distribution channels

Supermarkets/hypermarkets was the leading retail channel for hot drinks in 2008 and will continue to be the leader throughout the 2008-2013 forecast period. These large outlets are where consumers typically make their weekly purchases. However, smaller outlets, including independent small grocers and forecourt retailers, increased their off-trade sales in 2008, relying on their convenience. Additionally, non-store retailing continued to grow, driven primarily by the vending channel in the coffee sector.

Non-traditional products poised for growth in the forecast period

Hot drinks retail sales are expected to grow in 2008-2013, but at a slightly slower pace than in the 2003-2008 review period. The industry should continue to show growth, especially on the back of government initiatives to improve domestic coffee production. Retail value growth, however, will continue to be hampered by government price controls, which are not expected to be lifted in the 2008-2013 forecast period. The unavailability of standard coffee prompted consumers to try different hot drinks products, including decaffeinated coffee and other hot drinks. The ultimate success of these products, however, will depend on the consistent availability of standard coffee on store shelves.
