Executive summary

Hot drinks has strong showing in 2005

Hot drinks sustained fairly good growth at the end of the review period, with growth in total volume sales of 9% in 2005. This is a consequence of the enhanced appeal of hot beverages particularly to working consumers and households, because of its possible nutritional benefits. Moreover, the boom of coffee shops across the country in the review period increased the popularity of hot drinks in on-trade channels, because these shops have a tranquil ambiance conducive to building better professional and personal relationships. Frequenting coffee shops also conveys status for consumers who wish to appear sophisticated in their choice of leisure activity. In addition, the popularity of other hot drinks, spurred by the Milo brand from Nestlé Philippines, further increased in 2005. All in all, these factors resulted in a continuation of sales growth in hot drinks in 2005.

Other hot drinks has best growth performance due to healthy image

Other hot drinks, led by malt-based hot drinks, continued to outperform other sectors, exceeding 11% total volume growth in 2005. Advertising and promotional efforts from Nestlé Philippines Inc, the leading company in other hot drinks, helped to spur its performance in 2005. In addition, the evolution of these drinks as hale and hearty family drinks, and the growing health-consciousness of many Filipinos, further enhanced the popularity of other hot drinks at the end of the review period. Tea remained the least popular hot drink with Filipinos, who unlike their Asian neighbours do not have a tea-drinking tradition. And, despite its increasing popularity, coffee has not yet caught up with of other hot drinks as part of the lifestyle of most consumers.

Consumers seeking convenience encourage launch of new instant formats

Towards the end of the review period, several products emerged in new instant, “just add water”, or 3-in-1 formats, to meet the increasing need for convenience of working consumers. Smaller packages and an emphasis on nutritional content characterise these newer convenience products designed for people-on-the-go and those who skip breakfast.

Hot drinks has bright future depending on political and economic outcomes

While hot drinks has even better growth prospects in the forecast period, economic and political strife could negatively impact the market. During the forecast period, the Philippines faces ongoing issues in party politics, including the fate of local elections as well as the choice of presidential candidates in 2010. Should the political and economic situation of the country improve over the forecast period, the future of hot drinks remains optimistic, with an estimated total volume CAGR of almost 13%, an increase over the review period. In a country which otherwise favours carbonated soft drinks, both coffee and tea have good growth potential, with tea possibly getting a boost from increasing health consciousness among the population. Meanwhile, growing health awareness will likely also boost the sales of other hot drinks, seen to be the healthiest of all hot drinks.
