Executive summary

Steady growth for hot drinks

Over the review period, hot drinks in the UAE enjoyed a steady development with 8% and 10% CAGRs, respectively, in volume and value terms. Traditionally the Middle East is a tea drinking culture. However, coffee spiced with cardamom or so called qahwah (Arabian coffee) is also popular in the region. The vibrant demographics of the country, with many expatriates coming from various cultures, are a strong basis for dynamic growth in hot drinks. In 2005, all three sectors of the market, coffee, tea, and other hot drinks enjoyed similar growth rates in both volume and value terms.

Coffee volume sales exceed tea for the first time

A strong influence from the West and increasing numbers of expatriates from the Western world, where coffee drinking habits are strong, have pushed coffee consumption to new heights. In 2005, retail sales of coffee by volume exceeded those of tea for the first time. Coffee was boosted by the advertising activities from the multinationals, and especially with Nestlé promoting Nescafé brand.

Multinationals dominate the market

In 2005, imports of hot drinks remained highly fragmented. However, multinationals have already taken the lead, accounting for over a third of retail sales by value. Nestlé SA’s aggressive promotions and the advertising of its leading instant coffee brand Nescafé have achieved results and the younger generation has switched from traditional Arabian coffee to instant coffee.

Future growth will slow down

Over the forecast period, hot drinks volume growth will remain steady, but lower than during the review period. Health-conscious consumers will choose the healthier soft drinks option. The relatively high per capita consumption of hot drinks does not leave much room for future growth. This will be generated mainly by population increases. The hot climate will contribute more to soft drinks growth, as hot drinks are much less in favour during the long hot summers when temperatures soar.
