Executive summary

National Credit Act to have minimal impact on home furnishing sales

The government, faced with an uncomfortably high household debt to disposable income ratio proposed the implementation of a National Credit Act in June 2007. The purpose of this Act is to discourage reckless lending and promote the responsible awarding of credit. While there are genuine fears that this will impact negatively on the furniture market which operates predominantly on credit, indications point to a likely upward movement in credit utilisation, which will minimise the effect of the Act on growth rates.

Consumer base grows as new employment generated

The government committed expenditure to infrastructure development, such as housing, electrification and transport. This will generate a cycle of downstream economic activity, whose net effect is the generation of new employment opportunities and the subsequent growth of the consumer base, whose primary purchases will be furniture and housewares.

New product development set to drive housewares sales

The development of new housewares products that address the lifestyle needs of consumers resulted in the growth in sales of these products. Technological enhancements, like seal systems on cookware that retain the nutritional value of food after cooking are appealing to increasingly informed health conscious consumers, who are particular about what they eat.

Low interest rates, tax relief and increased disposable incomes

Tax relief measures announced in the 2007 budget will result in more disposable income for consumers especially in the lower middle class and lower income brackets. Given the low interest rates, the cost of debt servicing becomes low and this will cushion the effects of the high household debt to disposable income ratio. With real growth expected in the economy, sales growth rates are expected to remain high.

New homeowners expected to drive volume sales

Positive economic growth is set to result in further expansion of the emerging middle class with disposable income. As the number of new homeowners increases this is likely to result in more furniture sales as they seek to create beautiful environments in their living space.
