Executive summary
Health concerns drive demand for healthy food and drinks
Concerns about obesity publicised by the media in 2006 led to changes in consumer preferences. There has been a significant shift in preference towards low-calorie, no sugar carbonated drinks, RTD tea, bottled water and fruit or vegetable juice. Demand for healthy food, such as sandwiches and salads, increased. Consumers became more aware about the effects of fat, sodium and carbohydrates on their health.
State governments, with the support of parents, school administrators and teachers, have established regulations restricting the type of food and drinks sold in school canteens, fundraising and sporting events. In some states, these regulations took effect in 2006. The affected products are food and drinks that are high in sugar and fat, such as high-calorie carbonated drinks, crisps/chips, extruded snacks, chocolates, and sugar confectionery. Healthier alternatives such as diet carbonated drinks, fruit juice, bottled water, sandwiches and salads are expected to replace these products. The impulse channels affected include vending machines and school canteens.
Hectic lifestyles boost demand for convenient food
Longer working hours, high-rise inner city living and greater participation of women in the workforce drive demand for convenient food. As people are working longer hours, they have less time to prepare meals from scratch. This has affected working women and those who commute or travel long distances to work. Those who choose to live in the inner city find it more convenient to eat in restaurants or buy from foodservice outlets and kiosks. Sales of convenient foods such as ready meals and sandwiches have been on the rise.
Impulse channels feel the effects of the rise in petrol prices
A rise in petrol prices has led to an increase in the number of people using public transport. Vending machines, kiosks and cafés located close to train stations and bus-stops have benefited from this increase. On the other hand, the impulse channels have had to contend with rises in input prices and transport costs, which have led to higher selling prices and tight profit margins. The products affected by the rise in oil prices include chocolate and sugar confectionery, biscuits, packaged/industrial cakes, carbonated drinks, RTD tea and powdered hot chocolate.
Forecourt retailing drives growth in impulse channel
In 2006, value sales in the impulse channels grew by 4% compared to the previous year. Forecourt retailing experienced the highest growth, of 6%, followed by duty-free and foodservice, at 4%. As the joint ventures between supermarket chains and oil companies strengthened, the number of forecourt outlets and their customer base also increased. The growth of the duty-free channel was in line with the increase in international tourist arrivals and resident departures, while the popularity of healthier menus drove the growth in foodservice.
Packaged drinks contribute to growth of impulse channel
Value sales of packaged drinks saw the highest growth in 2006, of 4%, followed by unpackaged drinks and packaged food, at 3%. RTD tea experienced the highest growth among packaged drinks, of 30%. The product is seen as a healthier alternative to high-calorie carbonated drinks.
