Executive summary

Sales recover from 2004 crisis

Sales were dramatically eroded in 2004 by political unrest and economic concerns, with many consumers opting to purchase OTC healthcare on the black market or cutting back on overall consumption. However, growth was resumed in 2005 as consumers began to return to retail products, assisted by higher disposable income levels and improvements in distribution.

Medicated skin care most dynamic as retailers expand range

Chained chemists/pharmacies expanded dramatically in 2005, with this widening the range of OTC healthcare products available. Medicated skin care benefited strongly from this in 2005 and was the most dynamic within overall OTC healthcare as a result. Consumer awareness of such products grew dramatically, partly due to the presence of sales advisors in such outlets.

Heavy fragmentation with reliance on imported generics

There are high levels of fragmentation within OTC healthcare. There are no significant domestic players and sales are dominated by a large number of imported generics sold at low prices. The leading players are global leaders such as Nycomed, Aventis and Novartis, with these generally benefiting from more consistent distribution. However, in volume and value terms, these players are dwarfed by the combined sales of generics.

Distribution limited to chemists/pharmacies but growing in geographical presence

Chained chemists/pharmacies continued to expand across Georgia in 2005, offering greater rural access to OTC healthcare. Chains dominated sales by 2005 and boosted sales by offering a wider range of products, thus reducing the OTC product shortages that are still experienced in the country. This encouraged many consumers to trade up to retail OTC healthcare from black market equivalents.

Strong growth for forecast period

Strong growth is expected for OTC healthcare during the forecast period, provided that the economic and political condition of the country remains stable. The government has pledged to focus on improving the provision of healthcare in general, while chained chemists/pharmacies have aggressive expansion plans for the country. The strongest growth will be seen for basic OTC healthcare such as analgesics and cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies, which will benefit from consumers trading up to retail products from the black market. Niches will in general continue to be under-developed and consumers will continue to seek out low-priced products due to low disposable incomes.
