Executive summary

Stable growth due to improved living standards

OTC healthcare continued to see good growth in 2006. Growth was mainly due to improved living standards and overall economic development, with consumer incomes rising as a result. OTC healthcare thus became more affordable and gained a larger consumer base. Moreover, with improving product knowledge, local consumers also began to feel more confident in self-medication and the use of OTC healthcare, which further boosted demand.

Foreign companies dominate

Foreign companies continue to dominate OTC healthcare. Local producers invested heavily in quality improvements and continued to offer more affordable products. However, the majority of consumers prefer foreign products when they can afford these, believing them to offer a greater guarantee of quality. Multinationals also benefit from greater marketing expertise and a higher budget for promotion and new product development. Consequently, the top 10 players in OTC healthcare were all multinationals in 2006, with Sanofi-Synthélabo and UPSA in the lead.

Accession to the WTO to attract more competition

Vietnam officially became the 150th WTO member in early-2007. For pharmaceuticals, Vietnam committed to reduce its import tax and to allow foreign companies to directly import into Vietnam. It will thus create a more level playing field for competition between local and foreign companies. In the long-term, pharmaceuticals is therefore expected to become much more competitive. Local consumers will benefit from this competition in terms of product quality improvements, price reductions and a wider product choice.

Stricter government control on price

In 2006, OTC healthcare prices remained very stable. This is largely due to the government taking various controlling and monitoring measures. Before increasing prices, pharmaceutical companies have to submit applications to the Ministry of Health, explaining the reasons for price increases. Very few applications were approved in 2006. This is because the price of pharmaceuticals was raised significantly in Vietnam over 2003 and 2004 and the government believes that current prices are already too high.

Potential for strong growth due to large population

Vietnam offers a strong potential for growth for pharmaceuticals. In 2006, most demand originated from urban areas, where income levels and living standards are significantly higher than in rural areas. However, in the forecast period, demand is expected to see strong growth in rural areas. Growth will be driven by the huge rural population gaining a better access to OTC healthcare, as the number of drugstores/parapharmacies and chemists/pharmacies in rural areas increases dynamically. Growth will also be supported by increased income levels in rural areas, with the government focused on boosting living standards for these rural dwellers.
