Executive summary

Packaged food continues to grow in 2008

Packaged food continued to enjoy good growth in 2008. Despite the increases in packaged food prices due to drought and petrol price rises, consumers continued to purchase Australian products to support the local market. Meal replacement products recorded the fastest retail volume and value growth in 2008 due to the increasing awareness of health issues such as diabetes, obesity and tooth decay. Consumers are now seeking healthier food choices and consuming meal replacement products as they try to lose weight and establish a healthy diet. In addition, the launch of many health campaigns by the government also created awareness of health issues amongst Australians.

Rising demand for healthier food in Australia

While health issues in Australia increased over the review period, many Australians become more aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Consumers purchased healthier packaged food products which were low in fat and/or sugar. Many also shifted towards more organic and fortified products. Functional packaged food with added calcium, vitamins or plant sterols started to emerge in Australia, as manufacturers sought ways to increase their value shares. The Australian government also launched health campaigns aimed at lowering the obesity rate in the country, which helped to increase the number of health-conscious consumers.

Artisanal producers continue to lead packaged food in 2007

Despite a slight fall in value share, artisanal producers continued to lead sales of packaged food in 2007. As more retail bakery stores appeared in Australia, and each offered a wide range of baked products, from bread to doughnuts, artisanal producers faced higher competition over the review period, and this threat is expected to remain over the forecast period. Multinationals continued to exert a strong influence on packaged food in Australia, through major branded players such Nestlé Australia Ltd and Cadbury Schweppes Australia Ltd.

Australians frequent supermarkets/hypermarkets more in 2008

Supermarkets/hypermarkets continued to dominate the distribution of packaged food in Australia in 2008. With Woolworths and Coles expanding the shelf space allocated to packaged food products, more products were available, and consumers found it more convenient to make their purchases at the same location. Both supermarkets/hypermarkets and convenience stores saw an increase in its value share of sales in 2008, although convenience stores trailed a long way behind supermarkets/hypermarkets.

Positive growth for packaged food over the forecast period

Demand for packaged food is expected to see continual growth over the forecast period. As more women are contributing to working society, this will result in them having less time to prepare proper meals for themselves and their families. Hence, many are seeking convenient packaged food such as on-the-go snack bars, biscuits, cereals, baked goods, milk, chilled processed food and ready meals. In addition, the introduction of many fortified and functional packaged food products will also drive sales, as consumers are becoming more aware of the health issues surrounding them. Also, the trend for premium snacks as a treat is likely to trigger stronger growth in impulse and indulgence products over the forecast period.
