Executive summary
Good review period growth driven by demographic trends
The review period saw good volume sales growth for packaged food, with this underpinned by demographic trends. There was ongoing urbanisation in Costa Rica during the review period, along with a growing number of women in the workforce. This resulted in a growing number of smaller single- and two-person households where all inhabitants are working. In turn, this resulted in busier consumer lifestyles and growing demand for convenience, which boosted sales of packaged food.
Growth hindered by economic downturn
In 2008 and 2009, Costa Rica suffered due to the global economic downturn, with this resulting in a decline in remittances from abroad and in travel and tourism sales. Consequently, many consumers experienced a drop in disposable income levels and cut back on their spending in response. This resulted in slower growth for most product areas in 2009, particularly in constant value terms.
Dairy cooperative leads but multinationals remain strong
Cooperativa de Productos de Leche Dos Pinos, RL was the leading player in packaged food in 2008, benefiting from its large number of dairy farmer members and from its resultant dominance of ice cream, dairy products and butter. However, this domestic cooperative is followed by Nestlé Costa Rica SA and numerous other multinationals are also strong. In 2008, Kraft, Bimbo, Unilever and Wal-Mart’s local representative Corporación de Supermercados Unidos SA were all among the top 10 players.
Smaller retailers gain share
During the review period as a whole, there was good growth for supermarkets/hypermarkets, as this channel expanded outlet volume across the country. However, 2009 saw a shift in shopping habits, with consumers increasingly purchasing small quantities as needed from independent small grocers rather than making a large weekly shop at supermarkets/hypermarkets. Consumers sought to economise by keeping purchases of packaged food to a minimum. As a consequence, independent small grocers gained value share in overall sales of packaged food in 2008 over the previous year.
Stronger growth ahead
The forecast period is expected to see a stronger performance for packaged food than that seen during the review period. This will occur due to the country’s expected economic recovery and will also be due to consumers’ lifestyles continuing to become faster-paced. Consumers will thus become increasingly willing to pay more for greater convenience, which will drive sales growth across packaged food. Products that offer a high degree of convenience are expected to perform particularly well, such as instant noodles and ready meals.
