Executive summary
Packaged food registered slow growth in Japan in 2008
2008 brought several challenges to the packaged food industry in Japan. In addition to a continuing decline in the birth rate and a rapidly ageing population, packaged food was significantly impacted by oil price increases. This led food manufacturers to increase food prices, which drove consumers to curtail spending on premium products and dining out. Despite the challenges, overall packaged food sales showed slight value growth in 2008. This growth was mainly attributed to sales increases of impulse and indulgence products and nutrition/staples which offered high-quality products with health benefits.
Increasing food prices drove unit price increases
Unit prices for packaged food continued to increase in 2008. Consumer interest in premium products shifted market focus towards products with higher unit prices. Furthermore, manufacturers passed on raw material price increases by increasing unit prices. However, with consumers becoming more price sensitive following the oil price hikes, some companies have maintained unit prices at lower levels by reducing pack sizes.
Competition with value-added products
The business environment for packaged food products has become more competitive. Despite this, most companies have focused on offering value-added products with health benefits and higher quality. Consequently, there has been extensive sales promotion of new and existing products on websites, mobile sites and TV commercials to boost sales. Companies promote individual brands to promote sales of entire product lines. For example, Ezaki Glico has individual brand websites for Pocky and Pretz for promoting its product lines.
Distribution shifts to convenience stores
The main distribution trend in packaged food over 2007 and 2008 was a continued shift towards convenience stores and supermarkets, especially for impulse and indulgence products. Consumer interest in health and wellbeing saw them move away from purchasing large quantities of these products, and shift towards purchasing small pack sizes in nearby convenience stores.
Demographics will be the biggest barrier to future growth
Over the forecast period, packaged food sales are expected to show slow growth between 2008 and 2013. It is expected that the economic downturn will continue over 2009, which will result in consumer spending being constrained. In addition, domestic demand in Japan is likely to shrink over the 2008-2013 period. Not only is the birth rate declining, but the proportion of elderly consumers is rising rapidly. These two factors, taken together, are likely to lead to declining demand on the home front for packaged food manufacturers. Therefore, even as the country pulls out of the economic downturn, it is projected that domestic packaged food manufacturers will increasingly look to overseas markets for future growth. Back in Japan, these packaged food manufacturers are expected to focus more heavily on innovations to cater to the greying consumer. The Japanese are well known for their creativity and this trait is likely to help stem the decline in sales of packaged food over the forecast period.
