Executive summary
Sales of packaged food peak in 2007
Sales of packaged food in Saudi Arabia continued to accelerate in 2007, registering its highest growth since 2002. Sales were largely driven by the strong advance continued in the sales of the leading and most established staple sectors, namely dairy products, bakery products and dried processed food. Despite approaching maturity across many categories within, there was still a great deal of room for further expansion in per capita consumption, especially for products like cheese, biscuits, pastries and rice. New product launches, aggressive advertising and promotional campaigns and improved distribution, especially among modern outlets like hypermarkets, were the main contributors for this growth across many sectors of the market.
2007 saw unit prices increase across many sectors of the market
A key 2007 trend that largely contributed to the strong growth in current value sales was the price increase that affected many locally manufactured and imported brands across many sectors, especially baby food and to a lesser extent dried processed food, oils and fats, and several subsectors in bakery products and dairy products. Although many experts related this increase to the recent rise in per capita income, suppliers justified this increase due to the increase in the cost of purchases of imported finished products as well as the increase in raw material prices. Growing demand for premium products and products with added-value features, especially health-minded products, was also evident across many sectors thanks to the continual increase in per capita income, new launches and an appreciable increase in Saudi consumer awareness.
Local producers achieved stronger gains in 2006
Packaged food in Saudi Arabia is highly fragmented, featuring a very strong presence of many multinational companies like Nestlé, Master Foods, Arla Foods, Danone, Kraft Jacobs, Lactalis, Groupe and PepsiCo Inc, as well as local giants like Almarai Co, Abdul-Kadir Al Muhaidib & Sons Group, Saudi Dairy & Foodstuff Co Ltd (SADAFCO), Savola Co and Halwani Bros Co, which all also appeared within the top 10 list of players in 2006. In addition to their aggressive development in terms of production capacity and variety, the year 2006 saw appreciable gains achieved by many local suppliers in dairy products and oils and fats following a wide-scale boycott of Danish products by Muslim consumers and retailers during the first half of 2006. Private label products also continued to develop well over 2006/2007 thanks to many newcomers either from trades like Al Wefag Trading Est or from retailers with chained outlets like Carrefour and Al Othaim.
Improved retail distribution continued to favour overall sales
The strong advance in sales of many products, especially niches that do not enjoy large penetration among the majority of Saudis, was largely fuelled by the impressive development continuing in the retailing infrastructure. The major distribution trend was the strong ongoing development of the supermarkets/hypermarkets channel, especially hypermarkets, which gained a strong following among both the Saudi and expatriate populations. Numbers and selling spaces of these outlets grew dramatically during the latter years of the review period as a result of the rapid expansion plans of leading local grocery retailers including Azizia Panda and Al Othaim and multinational retailers like Carrefour and Géant. The main channel that was hit by this progress was independent food stores and to a lesser extent the “other” distribution channel, which is represents mainly local bakeries.
Healthier value growth expected for packaged food over the forecast period
Packaged food in Saudi Arabia is expected to record a healthier CAGR over the forecast period, despite the fact that sales of well established sectors are projected to start slowing down due to maturity. The positive factors for growth from the review period are expected to continue to boost sales during the forecast period. These will include mainly the growing number of supermarkets/hypermarkets, increasing consumer awareness of health issues and higher disposable incomes and exposure to new types of packaged food.
