Executive summary

Packaged food experiences strong growth in South Africa in 2007

Despite rising food prices, packaged food achieved strong growth in 2007 largely due to increased consumer disposable income. This is particularly true of black middle-class consumers, who are entering into new packaged food categories, as they gain the means to try different, and more expensive food items. Moreover, as middle-to -upper income consumers trade-up to value-added products, so lower-income consumers have the opportunity to enter the economy segments of the packaged food industry.

Maize shortages affected packaged food in 2007

The price of maize experienced a dramatic increase in 2007, resulting in shortages and heavy price increases. Maize is the staple feed for livestock, but also a staple ingredient for food consumed by a large number of black South Africans. This development has affected many packaged food categories, from dairy to meat products. Milk producers have had to cut back on production in order to cover increased costs, resulting in dairy product shortages. Other packaged food types such as ready meals and frozen processed food have also experienced price hikes.

No significant changes in the leading packaged food companies in 2007

In 2007, packaged food in South Africa experienced no significant change in the retail value shares of the leading manufacturers. Continued innovation and new product development have ensured that the consumers’ interest in leading brands has remained, thereby helping to grow brand shares. The leading players include South African subsidiaries of international companies such as Unilever Group, Cadbury Schweppes Plc, and Nestlé SA, and local giants such as Tiger Brands Ltd and Pioneer Food Group Ltd.

Increased distribution has a positive impact on packaged food sales

While the majority of packaged food items are distributed through supermarkets/hypermarkets, the expansion of other distribution channels has had a positive impact on both retail value and volume sales of packaged food in South Africa. Not only is the variety of stock in standard convenience stores and petrol/gas/service station forecourts expanding, leading retailers are also opening an increasing number of outlets in rural areas. The improved accessibility of leading food brands ensured solid growth in 2007.

Packaged food is expected to perform well over the forecast period

Increased disposable income, product innovation and packaging updates should result in continued growth over the forecast period. The quality of packaged food should continue to improve, and thus consumers will not feel that they need to compromise on health, taste or convenience. As more affluent South Africans consumers trade-up, so new packaged food consumers from lower socioeconomic groups, fill the gaps.
