Executive summary
The impact of packaging on the environment
The impact of packaging on the environment is a major issue in Australia. Packaging in the country has a long history of environmental responsibility, having been proactively involved in recycling even before the environment became a major issue in the community at large in the 1990s. Packaging has attracted its fair share of criticism from the public and environmental groups, with calls in recent years for bans on plastic bags in supermarkets, and extended responsibilities on producers and retailers. Although packaging actually accounts for only about 10% of the urban solid waste stream, it is wrongly considered by many observers to be a major contributor to the overall environmental problems, and this is mainly because of its visibility. In addition to recycling, many players involved in packaging, including the major international FMCG manufacturers, have been making major environmental contributions in the form of light weighting since the late 1990s.
Consumer demand for convenience drives changes in food packaging
Competing demands on time resulting from the fast-paced lifestyles observed in the modern Western world have created a situation where time has become one of our greatest assets and where time-poor consumers seek out greater efficiencies in all aspects of their lives. One of the results of this social phenomenon has been the gradual introduction of more convenient food packaging, which can allow consumers to save time by presenting food products in a faster, easier and/or simpler fashion.
Private label growth impacts packaging
The major dominant retailers are making efforts to seize further market share by introducing newly re-invigorated private label strategies. For instance in supermarkets, Woolworth’s/Safeway and counterpart Coles have recently invested in upgrading their company-owned “brands”, and the new approach has so far resulted in a positive return with improves sales. This growth of the retailers’ brands is slowly eroding the market share of all other food and non-food manufacturers. But exactly what impact this will have on packaging remains unclear as private label products also rely heavily on packaging to catch the consumer’s eye.
Global financial crisis likely to affect packaging demand
The credit crunch arising from the sub-prime mortgage crisis has had a deep impact on the economies of the world. Like most other developed nations going through a period of economic slowdown, this has been a period that has seen stock markets tumble and both investor and consumer confidence fall. Fears of rising unemployment are expected to drive down consumption across many consumer categories and this could result in fluctuating demand for packaging solutions and even greater competitive pressures across packaging in general.
