Executive summary

Innovative pack types focus on differentiation

Leading packaging manufacturers focus on innovation to make their products different from those of competitors. As many food, drink and non-food products are highly competitive, packaging is the crucial factor that sets apart individual players. Although the emphasis is on practical, light and graphically attractive types, glass packaging is successfully withstanding the attack by rigid plastics. This is because glass has a long tradition and is perceived as the premium packaging type for alcoholic drinks as well as for food and non-food applications (including cosmetics and toiletries).

Packaging industry continues to develop positively in 2008

The packaging industry continued to be one of the most dynamic in Colombia, experiencing high rates of growth according to industry sources. The momentum of the industry has been supported by a favourable economy and in particular by mass consumption products. Product manufacturers have invested in new product development and developed new packaging for their products, and in some cases, introduced packaging for the first time.

Competitiveness in packaging in Colombia

In recent years, Colombian packaging companies also started selling not only the final product (the package) but a whole packaging solution, including design. This is driven partly because packaging has become more competitive, and selling a whole solution not only adds value, but also helps keep the customer loyal. Companies often send teams to their customers’ factories to analyze the packaging process to identify problems or create solutions. Examples of this include collaboration between Noel and Litoempaques to produce metal tins and jars for sweet biscuits brand Noel Galletas.

Consumer trends driving packaging companies' efforts

Consumer trends in Colombia are moving rapidly in terms of new products that match new worldwide trends. Faster-paced lifestyles, demand for convenience, and thirst for innovation provide growth areas for packaging companies. Most companies are still trying to adjust to the recent process of consolidation in the packaging industry. Whether companies are multinational enterprises which just entered packaging through a joint venture or merger/acquisition during the frenzy of corporate activity that took place in 2007, or are long-established local companies, they are all attempting to take advantage of the rapid increase in certain consumption trends to boost their sales. Frozen foods, ready meals, bottled water, energy and sports drinks, on-the-go snacks for breakfast/lunch, among others, are driving company efforts to come up with cheaper and more practical packaging solutions to match consumers' needs.

Multinationals are the biggest, but local players play key role in fragmented industry

Multinational manufacturers play a vital role in the packaging industry in Colombia. The big multinational manufacturers, such as Amcor PET Packaging, Tetra Pak Ltd, Alcoa CSI, and OI-Peldar, account for large shares in rigid plastic packaging, liquid carton, and glass packaging as well as closures in Colombia. Nonetheless, the packaging industry in Colombia accounts for a significant presence of large national players that are not only strong at national level, but also consolidated in the region, as is the case of Bioplast. The Colombian packaging industry is still highly fragmented, particularly in flexible and rigid plastic where hundreds of small companies absorb high volumes sales.
