Executive summary
Packaging industry grows over GDP
Industry sources estimate that value growth for the total packaging market in Colombia surpassed that of real GDP growth in 2005. As the Colombian economy recovers, many different industries have benefited from higher rates of consumption, including the food, beverages, cosmetics, and health care industries. As packaging is involved in most of these end products, the packaging industry, together with almost all consumer goods industries, enjoyed growth in 2005.
Flexible packaging performance allows growth of small- and medium–size companies
The higher levels of penetration that flexible plastic packaging experienced over the review period encouraged the creation and growth of many companies. These companies supply flexible packaging solutions to the wide array of sectors that use this packaging type. The unexpected growth of flexible packaging, including pouches, observed in hot drinks, sauces, dairy products and other types of packaged food, was due to its popularity among manufacturers and consumers. Among the companies that experienced healthy growth, not only in terms of sales but also in terms of market share, were manufacturers such as Sellopack SA, Organización Alico SA, Alfan Empaques and Plasticos Flexibles.
Few business movements in 2006
Unlike in previous years, in the first half of 2006 no major business movements were observed in the packaging industry. However, some partnerships were forged; for example, in 2006 small- and-medium-size enterprises such as Suprapack, Proempaques and Vinipack, created a new cooperative in order to strengthen their presence in the market and compete with multinationals. Meanwhile, traditional major players like Grupo Phoenix, Carpak SA, Smurfit Kappa Group, Holasa SA and O-I Peldar, continued to enjoy their leading positions in the market, though small- and medium-size enterprises continue to improve their ranking.
Packaging legislation for milk
The Colombian government established Form 2005, a special law that determines the format and specifications of products such as milk and the packaging format, which it should be sold. This legislation was made in response to health concerns about production and storage processes. In addition, specifications regarding labelling were imposed with the main objective of informing customers about the characteristics of the product and consumption indications.
Packaging companies invest in recycling
Colombian companies within the packaging industry are increasingly investigating the various benefits provided by recycling. Many companies began to take responsibility for recycling as a way of showing their interest in environmental issues. However, in financial terms companies discovered recycling was an excellent source of cheaper raw materials and a good way to reduce production costs; investment in recycling has grown as a consequence. Of the different packaging sectors, paper and carton manufacturers and glass packaging producers have benefited the most; their investment in recycling has played an important role in the strength of this industry.
