Executive summary

Nutritional labelling enters the market

The European Commission is supposed to make new proposals concerning the nutritional labelling during 2007. Nutritional labelling, as defined by ANIA (the French Association of Food Industries), brings information on nutritional ingredients of food products. Following the outbreak of obesity “epidemic”, several initiatives have been spontaneously taken by food manufacturers and retailers.

Three types of nutritional labelling exist across Europe:

Those providing information on recommended daily intake.

Those classifying food products as “good”, “average” or “bad”.

Those granting a logo of “good product” to a food product according to its ingredients.

The French manufacturing and retail industry favours the first type as it is considered as simple and easy to understand. ANIA recommends that nutritional information be presented in a table across Europe. In France, those future labelling changes will affect 73 billion packaging units.

Importance of environmental issues should strengthen

The French population seems to have recently realised that environmental issues might affect their daily lives over the next decades: those issues have entered the Presidential elections debate and most of the candidates have adopted a series of proposals made by a popular environment TV show producer. This trend might eventually affect the packaging industry or at least the French recycling system. A debate has already emerged on the necessity of some packaging, and secondary packaging has been the target of multiple attacks.

Competition is fierce

Small French companies which have not been able to invest in research and development and innovation are disappearing as products from Eastern but also Spanish companies are often more than 30% cheaper than those of French companies. Most of the company activity occurring in France concerns the divestures of the least competitive companies to concentrate efforts even in terms of production investment and research and development on core profitable activities.

French packaging industry now dominated by international groups

With the acquisition of Pechiney by Alcan in 2004, one of the last global French companies is now in foreign hands. Saint-Gobain seems to be the last one to resist as the French glassmaker continues to dominate its market sector and expand its activity predominantly abroad. Having reached maturity, the French market is even declining as the wine market shows. Consequently, most of the packaging manufacturers are looking for sources of development in other developing European markets as new markets like biomaterials markets could emerge in the following years.
