A General Overview
Packaging in Greece is a constantly evolving industry yet is not classified as a separate business sector as it falls in other business fields such as paper products, publishing (printing and graphic arts), elastic products, wood (cork and relevant products), metal products and construction and non- metallic mineral products. Industries in specified fields such as food and beverage products, agricultural products but also pharmaceutical products (cosmetics, detergents) and tobacco industries, are involved in packaging materials production.
Categories Within the Packaging Industry in Greece
The fact that many Greek packaging companies produce more than one type of packaging material e.g. rigid plastic packaging and metal tins at the same time makes it difficult to group industries according to their sector. Moreover, there are companies which produce packaging materials among other business operations for example, production of flexible packaging film and printing of film. Examples of companies where packaging material production is part of their manufacturing along with commercial operations are also present.
The First National Packaging Convention in Greece
The first convention on a national level in Greece, took place during the 20th packaging exhibition (Syskevasia 2008). Its programme included topics such as, "Contemporary Packaging and Branded Products"; "Smart packaging for quick management of products in shops"; "The success of recycling does not depend on legislation, but on the innovative power (dynamics) of the Market", but also subjects concerning food safety like "Evaluation of the toxicological consequences from the use of materials and objects in contact with food" and "Coaction of material and product packaging during the life cycle of the product". Further discussions took place during the convention concerning the latest in packaging material production, new technologies, safety and hygiene, environmental and recycling issues as well as food packaging and HCCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Point Control).
EU (European Union) Directives Apply to the Greek Packaging Industry
Food safety, hygiene and the environment are the major objectives of the EU regulations concerning the packaging industry. European legislation applies to the Greek packaging industry which is obliged to comply with its rules. The main objective concerning safety is that products should maintain their ingredients from production to consumption, intact.
