Executive summary
Packaging Overview
Packaging production in Italy increased by 1% in volume terms during 2006. This represented a promising improvement compared to the marginal decline recorded during 2005.
Packaging productivity continues to show a significant correlation with Italian manufacturing trends (down by 1% in volume terms during 2005 and up by 2% in volume terms during 2006). The 1% increase in packaging production during 2006 was determined by a 1% rise in domestic demand and a 5% increase in exports. Imports, although increasing by 10% in 2006, remained limited and accounted for only 8% of consumption.
The lower growth rate for packaging compared with manufacturing can be attributed to two factors. Firstly, packaging in Italy is reaching a phase of maturity on a par with other industrialised countries. Secondly, manufacturing is showing above-average growth rates in industries using medium- to low-weight packaging (cellulose, flexible polylaminates). Overall production has increased slightly, thanks to a positive trend in exports.
Packaging Material Overview
Aluminium packaging grew by 3% in volume terms during 2006, sustained by an increase in exports (approximately 4%) and dynamic domestic demand (up by 2%). It should be noted that, following a drop of approximately 5% in imports, Italian manufacturers increased their volume shares of aluminium packaging compared to foreign competitors.
A 2% increase in plastic packaging during 2006 was essentially determined by the positive trend in exports, which grew by approximately 5%. By contrast, growth in domestic demand was very limited.
Steel packaging, which includes tin plate packaging and 200-litre steel drums, fell by 2% during 2006. Tin plate packaging was down by 3%, essentially due to a considerable decline in demand for tomato derivatives (which continued to suffer from the manufacturing surplus of 2003-2005), but also because of competition from alternative packaging in some food products.
Steel drums suffered from a drop in domestic demand, mainly attributable to lower demand from packaged food, especially canned/preserved vegetables. Nevertheless, this packaging type remained dynamic, particularly for trays and pouches destined for packaging fresh food and portioned/pre-weighed food products.
Following two years of stagnation, cellulose packaging increased by 2% in 2006. This was the result of a revival in both domestic demand and exports. Corrugated cardboard packaging and elevated capacity bags led the recovery. Volume growth rates of other types of cellulose packaging were in line with, or slightly higher than, those of 2005.
Laminated cellulose packaging increased by 3% in 2006, thanks to the considerable increase in exports of cellulose-packaged drinks, as well as the penetration of laminated cellulose packaging into new product types. There was, however, a fall in cellulose packaging for milk and drinks destined for domestic consumption, due to a drop in demand in some product types (especially milk and fruit/vegetable juice).
Flexible packaging continued its positive growth trend in 2006. Volume growth reached 6%, driven by domestic demand and exports.
Glass packaging was driven by domestic demand for glass bottles, glass jars, hollow glass flacons (4%) and tubular glass phials and flacons. Volume growth in 2006 was slightly higher than in 2005, although still up by less than 1%. Glass bottles increased by 1%, while glass jars and flasks fell by 4% and 3%, respectively.
