Executive summary
Italy Feeling the Effects of Global Economic Crisis
The Italian economy experienced great difficulties during 2008, to which the packaging industry was not impervious. However, marginal growth was recorded towards the end of 2008 which suggests that the situation could be interpreted as a period of economic stagnation. The positive growth comes as a result of increased exports by 7% and national consumption.
The Italian packaging industry in 2008 was worth EUR25 billion and accounts for around 6% of global production, being one of the top-10 packaging companies in the world. Packaging productivity continues to show a significant correlation with Italian manufacturing trends (down marginally in terms of domestic demand). The low growth rate for packaging compared with manufacturing can be attributed to two factors. Firstly, packaging in Italy is reaching a phase of maturity on a par with other industrialised countries. Secondly, manufacturing is showing above-average growth rates in industries using medium- to low-weight packaging (cellulose, flexible polylaminates). Overall production has increased slightly, thanks to a positive trend in exports.
The Cost of Going Global
Packaging manufacturers are facing a crisis as they need to increase investments to comply with European waste legislation. This has forced manufacturers to join forces with other companies and the industry saw many changes as a result of mergers and acquisitions. On the positive side, the cost of upgrading the plants to be able to manufacture bio plastics could improve the cost efficiency of the operations in the future.
Increasing Focus on Serving the Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most important for packaging due to its high investment in research to ensure the internationalisation of the production; something that is attractive to packaging manufacturers for their potential long term revenue. However, pharmaceutical companies require a high level of customisation of their products as they need to differentiate from generic products, and thus packagers are required to adapt their capabilities to meet specific demands, which require a high level of investment. This trend is benefiting large manufacturers capable of investing the required amount, or risk-taking small companies that fully concentrate on satisfying a particular client.
Increase in Exports Impacts the Food and Beverage Industry
The increasing volume of exports combined with reduced family spending power has slightly affected domestic demand for food and beverage products. This factor has affected sales volumes and revenues of most Italian packagers, as most of them work solely for domestic brand owners.
