Executive summary

Regulations regarding packaging adjusted to the EU Directives

Poland, by joining EU was obliged to adjust its legal regulations regarding packaging and packaging waste to the EU requirements. It also concerns regulations regarding recovery and recycling of waste resulting from introduction of different kinds of packaging. However, Poland received a certain adjustment period whereby it needs to achieve the EU level by 2014.

Polish packaging conquered by international corporations

The majority of packaging supplied to Poland is through branch offices and production subsidiaries of international corporations. They mainly invest in their factories in Poland, which leads to increasing production capacities and differentiation of their product portfolio.

Export expansion of leading manufacturers in Poland

The major operators gradually extend their production capacities with the volume of products exceeding Polish expectations. Thus, the strategy of the larger players focuses on expansion to other countries in Eastern Europe. Examples of such initiatives in export can be found in companies such as O-I Produkcja Polska SA, Can-Pack SA and Grupa Kety SA.

Differentiated product range offered by Rexam

Rexam, as one of the leaders in glass packaging, tends to differentiate its offer by launching new product groups in Poland. An example of this activity was the opening of a new production site in Lodz manufacturing rigid plastic packaging in April 2006.

Amcor operated through specialised companies but now concentrates on flexibles

Amcor presented a specific organisational approach through the establishment of separate limited liability companies belonging to the Group. These national companies were specialised in particular packaging products and did not compete with each other.

In 2006 Amcor carried out the structural reorganisation. Polish business of this group is continued by Amcor Rentsch Polska Sp zoo. This company specializes in manufacturing of folding cartons and flexible paper for cigarettes. Other former Amcor operations involved in PET packaging and in closures respectively have been divested in 2006 as Amcor focuses on its flexible packaging business.

No manufacturing of liquid cartons in Poland`

Liquid cartons are imported to Poland from factories located in other countries. The major operators possess only branch offices or subsidiaries that deal with customers and offer advanced technological solutions.

Companies specialised in PET bottles see large prospects in dairy

Traditional use of PET bottles in Poland is found in bottled water and carbonates. However, in 2006 there was a visible offensive of PET bottles manufacturers in dairy, especially in regard to fresh milk and drinking yoghurt. A pioneer in this respect is SIG Combibloc, which delivers liquid carton packaging to Mlekovita, a leading dairy products manufacturers in Poland.

Output of cans clearly exceeds limited demand in Poland

The production capacities of leading manufacturers of metal beverage cans are essentially higher than volume expectations of Polish food and beverages manufacturers. As a result, the main operators, such as Can-Pack and Ball Packaging Europe Radomsko searched intensively for new customers in other Eastern European countries.
