Executive summary
Portuguese Packaging Industry To Be Hit by Economic Crisis in 2009
2008 saw a rise in global prices of raw packaging materials, such as plastic and aluminium, leading to increased retail prices of packaged food, beverages and non-foods. In this context, folding cartons and liquid cartons offer the advantage of a more stable raw material price than plastics for packagers and, as such, drinking milk products and juices will be two pillars driving the performance of packaging in Portugal over the forecast period. However, the global economic downturn is predicted to push Portuguese consumers to be particularly price- sensitive in 2009, with enduring consequences being a noticeable slowdown in total packaging volume growth over the next three years.
Environmental and Cost Concerns Rise Up the Agenda
Among consumers and retailers, environmental packaging and sustainability have come to the forefront of innovation through lighter packaging. Both consumers and retailers are welcoming the growth of products that are lighter to transport yet preserve their barrier properties, while packagers which are also cutting their costs are also benefiting from the reduction in raw material usage. This trend also marked the 2008 Wine Masters Challenge held in Portugal over 28-30 March 2008, where Barokes Wines announced that the entire Barokes range of premium Australian wines in a can was awarded a medal for its solution named "convenient wine".
Growing Environmental Awareness Favours Packaging Recycling Policies
Declared quantities of packaging waste increased significantly in comparison with 2006, clearly demonstrating that an environment effort to ensure that all packaging placed on the market is encompassed by the Integrated System for the Management of Packaging Waste. The targets for the taking back of materials for recycling also satisfied, and in some cases exceeded, expectations. Moreover, 2007 saw significant growth (20%) in the amounts of packaging waste recycled compared to 2006. The increase was mainly in the form of paper/cardboard, glass and plastic, which rose by 33%, 13% and 25%, respectively.
Printing a Key Innovation Area for 2008
Printers and brand owners have to make sure that their products stand out from the wide range of consumer brands available in the market. In 2008 the leading independent print management company Charterhouse opened a Portuguese office in Lisbon, as its European expansion continues to gather pace. The company accounts for a growing portfolio of European clients, which includes Unilever.
Another success story is Vox Artes Gráficas, one of Portugal's leading label converters. What distinguishes Vox, however, is its specialisation in labels for wines and port in particular – a market where quality and service are key factors, and print runs are usually small. Vox meets these criteria with a series of innovative, "best practice" solutions that aptly demonstrate how focusing on one particular market niche, and doing it well, can represent a highly successful business model in today's packaging industry.
