Executive summary
The increase in importance of the environment
The environmental impact of packaging waste has become an increasingly important issue to all the leading players in the Spanish packaging industry. The government has played an important role in this shift by focusing more effort on environmental education and launching several awareness campaigns. As a result, all the leading companies in the packaging industry in Spain are working towards obtaining the environmental certification ISO 14000. In addition, customers are increasingly aware of the recycling rates achieved by the industry and the role they play in the market. This trend will continue to grow in importance.
Larger companies continue to dominate and prey on smaller companies
The packaging industry in Spain is dominated by a small number of companies, as large operators have been acquiring local players, particularly in the glass and metal packaging industries. The cost of entering the packaging industry in Spain is high for new companies that have no presence, and this barrier to entry has resulted in a concentrated market. Moreover, the cost of waste materials and energy has increased substantially, leading several medium-small companies to cease operations due to their lack of profitability. In many cases, multinational companies buy small players and profit from their existing infrastructure. Thus the market has become even more concentrated over the review period, and it is predicted that this trend will continue over the forecast period.
The consumer perception
Consumers have a different perception about each form of packaging in the Spanish market. Spanish consumers associate a product strongly with its packaging, and it is difficult for players in the packaging industry to change the existing perception as consumers are reluctant to change their purchasing habits. Most companies in the industry aim to change these strong associations between products and pack type and they are beginning to launch products that are more daring with new materials, new colours and new-shaped designs in order to attract consumer attention and stimulate new business. Companies expect that in the long term the customer should be able to identify products in alternative forms of packaging and the effect of existing associations will diminish. A good example of this is wine packaged in metal cans, targeted towards younger consumers, who are generally more aware of the benefits of metal beverage cans and do not necessarily believe that wine should be available exclusively in glass bottles.
The increase of exports
All the main packaging companies that manufacture in Spain are focusing not only on supplying the national market but also on increasing their presence internationally. They offer quality products at competitive prices and exports are rising year-on-year in all sectors. Moreover, Spain enjoys a good geographic position and many companies see Spain as a springboard to achieve penetration into Africa.
The strength of Spanish companies
Not all the leading companies in the Spanish packaging industry are foreign owned. Spanish companies lead in a number of sectors and competitiveness has greatly improved over the past 10-15 years. Spanish companies are now able to compete with international companies across a number of sectors and are also expanding their businesses abroad. Mivisa Envases SA, Corchos de Mérida and Cartonajes Bernabeu SA are some examples of the Spanish companies that lead in certain categories.
