Executive summary

Ministry of Environment works to tackle pressure regarding recycling of waste packaging

The Ministry of the Environment in the Czech Republic is facing increasing pressure from ecologists and others regarding issues relating to recyclable packaging and waste recovery in the country. In order to tackle these issues, in 2007 the Ministry of Environment strengthened its alliance with EKO-KOM as, a packaging company which provides collection of recyclable packaging and recovery of packaging waste. As a result, in 2007 a greater number of bins for collection of recyclable packaging, in different colours according to the packaging format, were placed throughout the country.

Shrink sleeves, the latest trend in packaging in the Czech Republic

Graphically improved shrink sleeves was an emerging trend in packaging in the Czech Republic in 2007. The ability to perfectly mould shrink sleeves to the shape of nearly any packaging format makes this type of packaging popular in many different industries, for example packaged food and soft drinks as well as for non-food products. In addition to the possibility of use even on the most complicated packaging surfaces, shrink sleeves also support communication with consumers, as manufacturers can print information regarding a particular product on shrink sleeves labels.

Popularity of non-/low-alcohol beer and carbonates boosts demand for metal beverage cans

Demand among consumers for high-quality products in soft drinks and increased consumption of non-/low-alcohol beer resulted in increased demand for metal beverage cans in 2007. Metal beverage cans are popular among on-the-go consumers and those who travel due to their convenient storage, strength and light weight compared to glass bottles, which were traditionally used as packaging for many types of soft drinks and beer. According to leading manufacturer of metal beverage cans, Rexam Beverage Can Czech Republic sro, large party kegs in beer and multipacks in beer and carbonates were particularly popular in 2007.

Use of glass packaging driven by alcoholic drinks and demand in on-trade channel

Glass packaging is supported by the widespread use of glass bottles in different categories of alcoholic drinks. Also, demand for glass packaging increased in 2007 due to increased desire among consumers to dine out in high quality establishments and for their beverages to be served in glass bottles. Furthermore, the popularity of glass packaging is driven by environmental factors as it can be 100% recycled.

Elopak Trading AG focuses on marketing of its liquid cartons in fruit/vegetable juice

Elopak Trading AG’s activities in 2007 focused largely on marketing through which the company guaranteed itself a pioneer advantage by launching a promotional campaign directed at consumers in order to influence their behaviour. The company also made great efforts to make consumers perceive that the products in fruit/vegetable juice that were packed in Elopak liquid cartons are fresh and free of additional artificial preservatives.
