Soft Drinks Enjoys Growth

Soft drinks in Hong Kong grew in terms of total volume in 2008. Soft drinks growth was mainly driven by fruit/vegetable juice, bottled water and functional drinks. Consumers moved towards healthier drinks in 2008, which resulted in the decline of carbonates total volume sales that year. Good marketing strategies also played a part in the positive growth during 2008 as these categories witnessed substantial financial investment in their advertisement campaigns.

Health Products is the Main Trend in Hong Kong

Consumers are more educated and aware of health and wellness issues. They are more selective of soft drinks containing healthy ingredients and value-added nutrients. 100% juice is becoming increasingly popular due to their high nutrient value. Consumers are shifting their preferences from carbonated soft drinks towards RTD drinks and other fruit juice. In addition, many published reports take a negative position towards carbonates due to the adverse effects of consuming too many carbonated drinks, which further affects sales.

Fierce Competition for Soft Drinks in Hong Kong

Unit prices for soft drinks are low in Hong Kong due to fierce competition, especially in fruit/vegetable juice, RTD tea, Asian speciality drinks and carbonates. In order to ensure survival, especially for Asian speciality drinks, new innovations or new flavours are frequent occurrences to maintain a cutting edge over rival companies. Consumers are also looking for better health products, and there is a rising trend for RTD tea manufacturers to launch low sugar versions of their products in order to boost sales.

Convenience Stores Growing

Convenience stores retail volume share of soft drinks increased in 2008 as a result of the expansion of convenience stores generally in Hong Kong. However, supermarkets/hypermarkets remained the dominant channel for soft drinks in Hong Kong during 2008 as consumers prefer to purchase at such outlets due to their everyday low price strategy. In terms of individual packs however, convenience stores are doing better than supermarkets/hypermarkets as more people are opting to spend time outdoors due to the long summer in Hong Kong. Therefore companies are focusing more on promotions for individual packs at convenience stores than in supermarkets/hypermarkets.

Limited Growth Expected

Slower total volume growth is expected over the forecast period due to the maturity of soft drinks and to an anticipated economic downturn in 2009. The health trend is expected to continue over the forecast period, whereby consumers prefer healthier varieties such as low calorie or low sugar soft drinks. Products such as carbonates will continue to suffer a decline in total volume sales over the forecast period as consumers are moving towards healthier soft drinks such as fruit/vegetable juice.
