Executive summary
Soft drinks see moderate growth
Soft drinks saw stable growth in 2008 at 3% in both total volume and total value growth, reaching almost SKK22 billion and 983 million litres. Stable growth was a result of the steady growth of the wider economy. Economic performance was a major driver, with soft drinks growth reflected in the higher disposable incomes of Slovak households. However, volume growth was slower in comparison to the three previous years. Although disposable incomes and average monthly salaries in Slovakia rose in 2008, soft drinks were impacted by the rising unit prices of food in general. Slovak consumers thus became more careful when purchasing food and soft drinks.
Sales boosted by demand for healthy ingredients
During 2008 one of the most important trends was rising demand for healthy ingredients and functional additives in soft drinks. This demand was part of the broader health and wellness trend which influences the Slovakian market in numerous ways. Slovaks have become more aware of their health and consequently demand products that offer added value, including more vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts and antioxidants or simply no colourings or preservatives. Another important factor driving soft drinks sales was the growing demand for higher quality premium products, for example 100% fruit/vegetable juice or specialised still bottled water products.
Coca-Cola Beverages Slovakia leads soft drinks
Coca-Cola Beverages Slovakia sro was the clear leader in both volume and value terms in 2008. The company benefited from the widespread awareness of its products among Slovaks. Other important factors behind its strong position were its constant promotional efforts and advertising of the company’s brands. The company was present with at least one important brand in almost all soft drinks categories. Whilst effectively maintaining its share in most product areas, the company strengthened its position within RTD tea following the launch of the Nestea Vitao brand, which gained widespread acceptance among Slovaks. Another important launch by Coca-Cola Beverages Slovakia was the RTD coffee brand, Illy.
Slovaks prefer smaller retail outlets when purchasing soft drinks
During the review period Slovaks demonstrated a preference for small grocery retailers when purchasing soft drinks, with this channel accounting for a 41% share of total volume sales. Among this group, independent small grocers had the highest share at 36% of total volume sales. However, small grocery retailers’ share declined by one percentage point in comparison to 2007 as discounters and other grocery retailers gained in popularity among Slovaks. Supermarkets/hypermarkets’ share remained relatively stable with slight growth at the end of the review period. The main reason for the rising share of discounters is the prevailing price sensitivity of the consumer base within the larger soft drinks categories such as carbonates and bottled water.
Future is expected to be increasing
Soft drinks are expected to achieve stable positive growth in volume terms over the forecast period, rising by 13% in total to reach 1.1 billion litres by 2013. Growth, however, will be significantly slower in terms of constant value sales, which will increase by less than 7% in total to reach SKK23 billion in 2013. Slow constant value growth will be the result of similar factors across most soft drinks categories. Rising competition and a greater level of sophistication will lead to the presence of a wider range of brands. As a consequence, price competition will place downward pressure on prices. A second factor to push down unit prices will be the strengthening of the economy segment and private label products.
