Executive summary
Smoking rates continue to increase
Despite the attempts by the Greek government to inform and discourage Greeks from smoking, the results are not satisfying. Higher smoking rates were recorded by the National Statistical Company, although advertising has been partially and will be totally banned during 2007; warnings on cigarette packs have been harsher with regard to the consequences of smoking and smoking restrictions are increasing. The higher smoking age group is males between 35-50-years-old males but the most alarming increase is that of teenagers where almost 9% of 14-year-old children smoke reaching 28% at the age of eighteen.
Keranis default
Following continuous losses within the review period, Keranis AVEE halted production during 2006. In October 2006 the company was delisted from the Athens Stock Exchange and in order to cope with obligations, the sale of the company’s premises was imposed by the Greek government. The case is presently in court since besides General Union, one of Keranis’s creditors, all other creditors along with the company’s personnel have not yet been paid.
Special Consumption Tax increase boosts cigarette prices
The introduction of a higher Special Consumption Tax (EFK) during 2006 brought changes in cigarette unit prices. Retail value increased by up to 50% in some cases and this mainly boosted the minimum price of cheap cigarettes. The minimum price of cigarettes was set at EUR1.20 following a 20% increase over 2005 and premium cigarettes which are sold at maximum prices reached EUR3.20.
High-tar cigarettes lose favour
The decline in high-tar cigarettes continues since the shift towards a “healthier” lifestyle becomes more evident in the everyday life of Greek consumers. Slimmer, low tar and nicotine cigarettes became more fashionable and therefore enjoy not only an increased target market but also the preference of past “heavy” smokers. High tar and nicotine cigarettes faced a continuous decrease in the last years of the review period and this is expected to continue as they are slowly but steadily driven out of competition over the forecast period.
Cigars and cigarillos remain inert
Cigars and cigarillos in Greece remain more or less at the same levels. Cigars faced a small current value decrease attributed mainly to high product prices and high seasonality characteristics of the market. On the other hand, cigarillos performed relatively better. Sales were at the same levels for several years and decreases are not expected. Product differentiations (introduction of new flavours) might have not brought the desired results but market share percentages were maintained throughout the review period.
