Executive summary
Smoking population has stabilised
Currently, around one third of over 18-year-olds in Slovakia smokes. Compared to previous years, the situation has stabilised. The smoking prevalence among young people is higher than the national average and is not decreasing. Some 40% of secondary school students smoke, while 15% of them only smoke occasionally. The age at which Slovaks start smoking is decreasing.
Compromise between higher taxes and prices and illicit trade
In Slovakia, prices of tobacco products are still relatively low compared to other European countries. However, history repeatedly showed that each time prices increased, official consumption went down at the expense of illicit trade mainly from Ukraine, to which Slovakia annually loses millions of crowns. Slovakia has a real challenge to deal with as it will have to increase taxes on tobacco products to reach the minima imposed by the EU, and at the same time control illicit trade.
Cigarettes sector characterised by the growth of ultra-low tar cigarettes
The Slovaks are starting to become more conscious about the dangers of smoking. They continue to smoke but are turning to “lighter” products like low-tar or ultra-low tar cigarettes. In addition, manufacturers started to introduce new coloured and small packages tending to show a trendy design or “soft” product, giving the smoker the feeling that there was no real danger to health.
Cigars characterised by growth in small cigars and cigarillos
The Slovak cigars sector is seeing a boom thanks to strong growth in sales of small cigars and cigarillos. Slovaks are benefiting from higher disposable incomes and smoke cigars and cigarillos in an effort to achieve a certain upmarket image. Small cigars and cigarillos are also growing thanks to very beneficial taxation.
