Executive summary

Growth in toys and games for the year 2008

There was an increase in growth for toys and games, particularly in the video games sector, which saw an increase in the number of sales for video games consoles and video games software that accompany the consoles. 2008 was also a good year for traditional toys and games although there were signs of economic difficulties. Popular movies releases over the year included Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Batman and The Hulk, and they provided an increase in sales for figurines, activity toys and model vehicles that depict a replica as featured in the respective movies.

Nintendo Wii to change the way games are played

As more people are health conscious nowadays, one games console is going to change the way games are meant to be played. Almost everyone can make use of the Nintendo Wii for exercise purpose. Popular sports such as golf, tennis, boxing and step aerobics can be played virtually at the user’s convenience at home. This has been proven to reduce stress and caring homes for the elderly and some hospitals have adopted the system.

Video games consoles and games are on the rise

Major video games and console companies try to remain competitive and this has provided healthy results for the main players, which include Nintendo Corp and Sony Entertainment Inc. HDMI and HD equipped LCD TVs accompanied the sales of video games as they provided the best in game experience with realistic graphics and features. In a digital age where new products and innovations are surfacing, this sector will continue to dominate and attract both the younger generation as well as the older generation who have a passion for video games consoles.

Companies/retailers are wary of products after major recalls from big players

There was a recent scare when products tainted with lead were found in Mattel’s popular range of toys (nine million Chinese-made toys including Polly Pocket) and major companies, retailers and manufacturers in Malaysia are alert to be stricter in terms of importing and distributing their products. This affected the sales of traditional toys in the first quarter of the year as consumers were aware of the issue and popular toys were being carefully examined before being sold.

Overall toy market will be expected to increase with healthy growth in certain subsectors

The performance of the toy market will be expected to be good and have a healthy growth in the forecast period. There will be an increase in demand, which will contribute to better sales. Among the subsectors that will have a better growth in sales would be action figures, educational toys and video games. This is due to the strong demand among consumers and new video games consoles that will increase the overall performance of these market sectors. On the whole, most of the subsectors will enjoy positive results although subsectors such as outdoor and indoor games will not have much progress due to a lack of new innovative products and a shifting trend among consumers.
