American Samoa: The Other Samoa
With the tourism industry in neighbouring Western Samoa booming, American Samoa has been left to wonder why a similar boom has not taken place on its shores. Few potential tourists are aware that there is an American Samoa, and with its larger neighbour receiving an ever larger share of the spotlight this is a situation that is unlikely to be rectified soon.
American Samoa versus Hawaiian Airlines
American Samoa's problems have been intensified in recent years by a long-running dispute with Hawaiian Airlines, the only airline connecting American Samoa with the remainder of the US and therefore the world. This dispute – which revolves around prices and flight frequency – is of great concern, since without improving accessibility it will be impossible for American Samoa to achieve any increase in tourist visitor numbers.
Undeveloped Tourism Infrastructure
In addition to issues over air access to American Samoa, the territory also has few accommodation options, with no genuine resorts and little for tourists to do in terms of activities. A new American Samoa Visitor's Bureau (ASVB) is hoped to help rectify this situation, encouraging the private sector to develop the infrastructure required to meet tourist needs once they arrive. Given the current low visitor numbers, and little indication that they will change significantly in the future, few potential operators are willing to invest in the tourism industry.
Giving Eco-tourism a Try
The first step in increasing the awareness of American Samoa amongst potential visitors is to find a point of differentiation. American Samoa has decided to focus on eco-tourism, centred upon the National Park of American Samoa that is spread across three islands. Two of those islands, Ta'u and Ofu, are practically untouched, and it is hoped that this will attract tourists searching for the perfect unspoilt beach.
