Executive summary

Airlines and Cruise Companies Affected by the High Price of Fuel

Escalating oil prices left a number of airlines with no choice other than to pass higher costs onto passengers. However, aggressive competition, characterised by excess capacity and non-stop fare wars, led to real price reductions in air fares at the end of the review period. In particular, Anguilla will be affected by the merger between LIAT and Caribbean Star, which will probably decrease capacity and increase fares. The financial and legal documentation of this merger was completed in the first quarter of 2007. Although cruises are affected by the rise in fuel prices, they react differently due to the high spend of passengers during travel. Even so, the world's second-largest cruise group, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, announced that it will charge passengers a fuel surcharge of US$5 or EUR3.50 a day from February 2008.

Investment in Anguilla Seems Non-stop

Despite the government restrictions on investment, there are many projects underway to construct new hotels and other facilities, mainly aimed at satisfying the needs of wealthy tourists. The infrastructure of the island is also being updated to adapt to the particular necessities of rich visitors. For example, the facilities at Wallblake airport were updated in the period 2004-2005, and one of the changes made was to welcome the exclusive jets of some luxury visitors. However, according to Lloyds Aviation Service, the company in charge of air traffic control, there are plans to add another runway in 2008, because the demand for landing space for jets was totally underestimated. It is also worth noting that according to industry experts, dry dock facilities will be developed in the future for luxury yachts, which will also add value to the tourist industry.

Anguilla Maintains Its Position as a Luxury Destination

Anguilla has become one of the favourite places in the Caribbean for wealthy tourists because it offers a great combination of beautiful white sandy beaches, luxury hotels and exclusive restaurants which satisfy the most demanding guests, combined with all the privacy that these types of visitors demand. All these features shape Anguilla into a very attractive destination for the relaxation of the wealthiest tourists in the world.

Anguilla Is Member of the Emergency Fund

Anguilla is member of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility. This fund will allow the country, in the case of a major hazard, to have access to early cash payments. Anguilla is one of 16 countries in the region which are part of this facility, which started operations from the 2007 Caribbean hurricane season. This fund will provide the country with the funds to react quickly to restore its travel infrastructure in case of disaster, and not to lose the important inflow of tourists. It is provided with coverage in the case of hurricanes of up to US$53 million and US$5 million in the event of an earthquake.
