Executive summary

Government promotes Aruba

Aruba is highly dependent on US visitors, which account for about 70% of tourists. The Aruba Tourism Authority is trying to lessen the country’s dependence on US visitors by promoting Aruba internationally, particularly in Europe. However, the Aruba Tourism Authority is not neglecting the US and launched the “Rumba Aruba” campaign during the autumn of 2006 in the US.

Aruba is a hotbed of investment

Aruba has a well developed tourism infrastructure, but it is undergoing a great deal of investment to renovate the existing infrastructure. The government is investing US$34 million to improve the Queen Beatrix International Airport and expanding the port. Additionally the government is creating a linear park that will extend from the international airport along the hotel corridor for 10 miles. The hotel industry is undergoing renovations and expansion, including the Aruba Grand, Holiday Inn and Divi Resorts.

Tourism growth has its risks

The Aruba Tourism Authority is keen on increasing the number of visitors, but it risks diluting Aruba’s reputation as a luxury destination. This is particularly concerning with the arrival of JetBlue in September 2006. Additionally, scientists and activists have raised concerned about the environmental impact of the increasing development and number of visitors.
