Executive summary
Economic downturn causes upsurge in deals and promotions
The economic downturn caused an upsurge in discounting and promotions as hotels and resorts viewed this strategy as a way to attract tourists. Large resorts and budget hotels experienced financial difficulties in 2008. Several hotels had to cut jobs in late 2008 and early 2009. Sandals Resorts announced that 650 workers would be laid-off off at its resort in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas. Atlantis Hotel, Bahamas’ largest employer after the government, had to lay-off 800 workers while recording the lowest occupation rates. Meanwhile, Sheraton Resort and Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino each laid-off 40 workers. Cuts in room rates, airfare rebates, and resort credits became common because of the economic downturn. The Bahamas experiences more last-minute bookings for short-breaks when the temperatures are low or the weather inclement in North America. Economic uncertainty altered consumers' buying patterns and some people booked trips due to the substantial discounts on offer.
Caribbean Marketplace 2008
The hosting of Caribbean Marketplace 2008 offered the worldwide promotion of the Bahamas as a tourist destination and consolidated business agreements between investors interested in generating profits through its tourism industry. Over 1,000 supplier delegates represented 381 supplier companies from 32 countries while 369 buyer delegates represented 148 companies from 22 countries. Over 16,000 appointments between suppliers and buyers were scheduled in 2008. However, the event will not be hosted in the Bahamas in 2009.
Grand Bahama - a top tourist destination
The Bahamas Hotel Association (BHA), hoteliers and other tourism-related business operators devised a new strategy for Grand Bahama at the beginning of 2008. Grand Bahama offers not only beautiful beaches but the possibility of practicing sport tourism, such as snorkelling, diving, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, parasailing, horseback riding, and tennis. In May 2008, at the Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards, Grand Bahama was among the top 25 Latin America/Caribbean destinations, chosen by a combination of TripAdvisor and tourists.
Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility prospers
The 16 member countries of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) renewed the group’s policies in 2008, ensuring liquidity if hit by an earthquake or hurricane. At the Insurance Day London Market Awards in December 2008, CCRIF was named Transaction of the Year. CCRIF also received the Re/Insurance Initiative of the Year prize at the 2008 Review Worldwide Reinsurance Awards.
