Executive summary

Positive performance in 2008 despite global financial crisis

Owing to the global financial crisis, which also affected the Kingdom of Bahrain, travel and tourism suffered to some extent towards the end of the review period. However, travel and tourism continued to give a positive performance in 2008 owing to the high level of development that took place throughout the year. Firstly in terms of transportation, the Bahraini and Qatari governments signed an agreement to inaugurate the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway and the Bahraini government launched its first low-cost carrier, Bahrain Air. Secondly, three new shopping centres were constructed in 2008, namely Bahrain City Centre, Moda Mall at the World Trade Centre and Harbour Mall at the Bahrain Financial Harbour. Thirdly, with regard to real estate, the man-made Amwaj Islands became operational in 2008 and this emerged as a tourist attraction.

Bahrain Air takes off while Gulf Air continues to struggle

The introduction of Bahrain’s first low-cost carrier, Bahrain Air, was the highlight of 2008 as it filled the gap created by the departure of Oman Air in 2006. The flight plan is to cover the GCC, Middle East and North Africa and the Indian subcontinent, providing regular traffic to and from Bahrain. On the other hand, ailing national carrier Gulf Air suffered from criticism on the part of the Bahraini parliament and MPs, who requested a change in the management of the company.

Formula One Grand Prix faces regional competition

The Gulf Air Formula One Grand Prix, which has established itself as a major tourist attraction in Bahrain is expected to potentially lose some of its attraction in 2009 as neighbouring Abu Dhabi becomes a Formula One Grand Prix location. In November 2009, Abu Dhabi will host the finale of the 2009 Formula One Grand Prix and this is expected to potentially hamper tourist arrivals to Bahrain, as demand from tourists who planned to take a one-off trip to Bahrain for the Grand Prix may decide to go elsewhere.

Total broadband coverage arrives in Bahrain

In January 2009, Bahrain Telecommunications Company, Batelco, completed the final phase of conversion to the next generation network (NGN), a milestone through which Bahrain became the first country in the world with countrywide broadband setup. With online sales already posting healthy growth in travel accommodation, transportation, travel retail and car rental, these categories are expected to develop further over the forecast period owing to internet developments in the country.

Tourist arrivals expected to increase due to completion of tourist projects

With the man-made Amwaj Islands becoming operational in 2008 and as other tourist projects are completed, tourist attractions in Bahrain will continue to encourage record numbers of visitors over the forecast period, especially as these attractions become better known on an international level.
