The British Invasion
Because Barbados was under British control until 1966, visitors from Britain comprise the majority of arrivals. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic offer daily non-stop flights to Barbados from Britain. However, in 2006, US Airways and Delta added routes from Charlotte and Atlanta, respectively, to Barbados, which will increase the number of Americans to the island and help lessen the dependency on Britain. Additionally, the government is investing in the business infrastructure to lure business travellers.
The Government Endorses Tourism
Tourism is the main industry in Barbados, which has led the government to develop policies to grow it. The Barbados Tourism Authority is the government entity responsible for these policies, but it has partnered with the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association on several initiatives. In 2006, the Barbados Tourism Authority launched the “Best of Barbados” vacation package that offered discounts to American tourists. The government is also looking forward to promoting Barbados during the 2007 Cricket World Cup, in which the island is hosting the final match. Two more entities, Barbados Tourism Investment Inc and Barbados Investment and Development Corporation work to invest in an infrastructure to increase tourism. The government is also looking to promote golf tourism and will play host to the World Golf Championships. The government also wants to attract visitors who own mega-yachts.
From Barbados to the Caribbean
Grantely Adams International Airport is the link for international air traffic in the Eastern Caribbean. It also serves as the hub for LIAT airlines, in which the Barbadian governments owns a stake. However, airlift has increased to the island. LIAT airlines suffered under huge debt and in September 2006, the airline announced that it would cut operations by 20%. In October 2006, the airline announced it was talking with Caribbean Star about a merger.
