Executive summary

Passport required

Since 1 October 2007, American citizens have needed their passports to travel to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. This policy was launched January 2007, but its implementation was postponed because of delays in passport delivery. In the past, the state ID or driver’s license was a valid ID document. During September 2007, ID was still accepted but it had to be accompanied by the guarantee of the passport request.

Rental cars and casinos still banned

Rental cars are banned in Bermuda due to the traffic problems. The island is a small country with many private cars. Rental cars would bring more pollution and additional traffic congestion. Therefore, there is no intention to permit it in the short term.

Bermuda also forbids casino, but there are some discussions about the possibility of changing that policy. Casinos create important revenues even for the government, and Bermuda’s visitors have, for the most part, high incomes.

New airlines arriving in Bermuda

More airlines are arriving in the island. Bermuda’s visitors are mostly from the US, followed by Canadians and British people. A new company, Zoom Airlines, started flying to Bermuda in the summer of 2007. This company is a low-cost airline, and flies from Bermuda to London and New York twice a week. In addition, Jet Blue has added a new weekly flight to Bermuda from New York.
