Key Trends and Development
Tourist arrivals reached 172,000 in 2005 and a growth of 6% is expected for 2006. Business and cultural tourism account for this growth as Burkina Faso established new festivals and international professional gatherings during the review period.
With a poorly developed tourism infrastructure, the government is actively engaged in upgrading and modernising efforts in the transportation and travel accommodation markets. Measures to attract foreign and private investment are also under consideration as the travel and tourism industry cannot develop much further without substantial additional funding.
In order to ensure a sustainable approach to tourism development, the government is turning to ecotourism. The promotion of already existing sites of interest to ecotourists and the development of new sites in the west and north of the country are becoming priorities for the government. Ecotourism is in its infancy in Burkina Faso but should soon become an alternative product for the travel and tourism industry.
Travel Accommodation Sector
The hotel infrastructure of the country is heavily concentrated in the capital Ouagadougou and business visitors account for the majority of customers. Efforts to build new travel accommodation across the country are underway and Burkina Faso’s government has created a Tourism Development Fund to enable the financing of such projects.
The improvement of service quality is also a priority, and training schools and the professional organisation of the market into trade associations are allowing for a more organised approach to the development of travel accommodation in Burkina Faso.
Transportation Sector
In order to remove barriers to tourism development, the government is involved in major programmes of roads construction and repair and the construction of a new airport in Ouagadougou, set to replace the existing one by 2015.
This should ensure that all the regions of the country are accessible all year round and that increased air passenger traffic can be handled safely. With plans to develop all the regions for tourism, these infrastructure projects are crucial to the government’s travel and tourism development policy.
Travel Retail Accommodation
As of 2007, there are 60 travel retail outlets in Burkina Faso, but this is set to expand considerably with the development of tourism sites throughout the country.
Safaris, hunting and fishing excursions and cultural visits account for the majority of all tourism activities currently available in Burkina Faso.
