Investments from international and domestic sources

According to Cape Verde Investments, the institute responsible for the register and approval of external investments, travel and tourism accounted for significant investment in 2005. Significant new investment is expected to occur over the forecast period.

The origin of this capital is mostly European: Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, and more recently the UK and Ireland. The majority of investments are geared towards luxury accommodation.

Cape Verde aims to become a leading golfing holiday destination

In May 2006, Cape Verde’s government, the local developer Cape Verde Development, Ernie Els, the company owned by the world famous golfer of the same name and PGA Golf Management, signed a contract which will mean Cape Verde will receive substantial investments aimed at making the country a top golfing tourism destination. The projects, which include two tourist resorts, one on Sal Island (Murdeira Beach) and the other on Sao Vicente (Baía das Gatas), should be completed in 2011.

High level of confidence

The high level of investment in Cape Verde shows the confidence of investors in relation to this group of islands, which is quite different to the rest of Africa. The recently opened Boa Vista resort is one of the biggest in terms of area in West Africa; it encompasses 18 hectares of land. The resort provides 850 beds, and generates its own energy supply.
