Key Trends and Develoments
While Congo-Brazzaville has enormous potential for growth in terms of tourism and economic development, it has just emerged from a tumultuous period of civil war that still affects parts of the country. The general instability suffered by the region as a whole is also affecting the country's ability to achieve stability and sustained economic development.
In this climate, tourism is not perceived as a priority although the government's efforts to diversify the economy away from its reliance on oil revenues mean that the travel and tourism industry has yet to play a vital role in the country's economic development. Poor infrastructure and a dismantled transportation network are being addressed first and this should considerably improve the prospects for the travel and tourism industry. Ecotourism looks set to become the main tourism product on offer in Congo-Brazzaville and the country's three national parks should satisfy the most demanding of customers.
Travel Accommodation
Both Brazzaville and Pointe Noire have some international standard hotels such as the Novotel and Le Méridien but generally, travel accommodation is characterised by a marked absence of international brands and poor quality hotels outside the main cities.
Transportation
Air transport remains the most dynamic form of transportation in Congo-Brazzaville and provides vital links between the capital Brazzaville and Pointe Noire, the economic capital of the country. The railway system has suffered from years of civil war and is still subdued in parts of the country where Ninjas and other militia groups still operate against the government. The road infrastructure is limited and in a state of disrepair; the waterways still assume a large part of goods transportation and some passenger transport though more investment is needed. Overall, the government is tackling the country's shortcomings in transportation and significant progress is expected to occur from 2008.
Travel Retail
With the travel and tourism industry still in its infancy, travel retail remains underdeveloped. The Direction Générale du Tourisme et de l'Hôtellerie (the country's tourism board) is the main provider of excursions in and around Brazzaville and Pointe Noire. Gorilla watching trips and fishing expeditions tend to be organised by local tour operators, although South African operators are increasingly present in these forms of travel retail services.
