New airlines in Costa Rica
Juan Santamaría International Airport welcomed new international airlines in 2007. Frontier Airlines announced the beginning of its operations on the Denver-San José route in November 2007. Air Caraibes, a French airline, started to serve Costa Rica from Guadeloupe and Martinique, its Caribbean hubs that connect to Paris and the rest of Europe. The Canadian airline, Air Sunwig, has already requested permission to operate charter, cargo and mail services in Costa Rica; however government approval is still pending. After strengthening ties between the Chinese and Costa Rican governments, Air China is also willing to offer services to the country.
Non-stop investment in Costa Rica
Playa Hotels & Resorts SL, a creation of Spanish company Barceló Hotels & Resorts, has been in negotiation with the Costa Rican government to build a large tourist complex in the country. This company specialises in the construction of all-inclusive holiday centres in Latin American and Caribbean destinations. The group has shown an interest in Costa Rica as part of its expansion strategy. Guanacaste, the booming North Pacific area of Costa Rica located in the Punta Cacique region, is the preferred location for this project.
Increasing viability for health & wellness tourism in Costa Rica
“Costa Rica Medical Tourism” is an association of people and companies whose objective is the promotion of health & wellness tourism in Costa Rica. This group organised the Medical, Cosmethological and SPA Tourism International Fair in 2007, where professionals specialising in health and aesthetic matters promoted their services.
