Executive summary

Tourism still in its infancy

The tourism industry is still in its infancy in Equatorial Guinea. There are few leisure tourists, and the infrastructure of the country and of tourism facilities are still lacking. However, recent developments in transportation and travel accommodation, largely as a by-product of the flourishing oil industry, have improved the situation, and the government appears to be aware of the potential for new jobs and economic contributions from tourism. Visitor numbers have quadrupled over the last eight years, and although the bulk of these are business visitors, leisure travellers have actually increased by a higher percentage.

Government focus remains on oil revenue but is diversifying

Oil was discovered offshore in 1999, and since this time the government’s direction has been firmly focused on the oil industry. The country has experienced phenomenal economic growth and continues to show strong GDP growth. This concentration on the oil industry has at times been detrimental to the country’s progress in general, as much of the infrastructure remains inadequate and tourism facilities are scarce. However, the government finally appears to be awakening to the tourism potential of its country, and in the latest National Social and Economic Development Plan (NESDP), investment in tourism is stated as one of four priority sectors.

Business travellers dominate

The majority of travellers to Equatorial Guinea are business visitors, largely oil workers. Although neighbouring Cameroon and Gabon are the countries with the highest number of visitors, business travellers from Spain, France and the USA make up a large proportion of the remaining visitors. Consequently, facilities for the leisure traveller are minimal and travel retail remains underdeveloped. Business facilities on the other hand are improving, and new hotels are opening with conference and meeting facilities, and increased transport options to and around the country.

Varied landscapes with diverse flora and fauna

Equatorial Guinea is a small country comprising a mainland area and five inhabited islands. The mainland has lush rainforests with lowland and mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants and many other species. It also has stunning deserted beaches. The islands are all volcanic, with beaches of black sand and Bioko island, which contains the capital Malabo, is a haven for rare primate species and endangered turtles. The country’s potential for ecotourism is strong, and the diversity provided by the island/mainland situation is attractive for tourists.

Wealthy leisure tourists targeted

The government has named tourism as one of its four priority sectors within the National Social and Economic Development Plan. It has put its focus firmly on high-spending visitors, seeking those who wish to watch observe such as gorillas, whales and turtles and are prepared to pay high sums of money to do so. With its enviable natural attractions, Equatorial Guinea could eventually become a holiday paradise for eco-tourists if the environment is carefully managed, although initially only for those with money to spend.
